hi my name is nick, i run and own nickson motorsport ltd and im currently building a 944 turbo track day car for myself.

the car in question is a 1986 220 turbo in metallic black. 180k on the clock, but full service history under the care of afn, la rose porsche and northway. the history with the car is one of the most comprehensive i have ever seen, with hundreds of pages of invoices and receipts for work carried out. the car has also had a full engine rebuild, head gasket, belts, and turbocharger within the last few years.

the car came with a few extras including an amd chipset increasing power to 270bhp and 310ft lb of torque.
mille miglia 17inch turbo twist style wheels and goodyear eagle f1 tyres
full black leather sports interior
boost enhancer
m030 front 968 cs calipers and m030 front hubs, braided brake lines on the front
brake ducts

all in all a great base car which i picked up at a good price as the owner suspected a head gasket failure, which turned out to be leaking radiator.

a few pics of the car before it came apart (in a bit of a dirty state) cleans up really well !
[image][/image]

i then set to work stripping the interior ready for a nickson motorsport custom weld in cage, welded seat rails, interior seam welding etc.

i also stripped the front end down, and removed all the inlet system to check the turbo and i intend to replace all the turbo vacum lines

i have also been stripping many smaller items from the car such as the sunroof trim, cruise control, air con, large washer bottle, and the sunroof mech will be removed and the panel bonded in place

i removed the dash and cut the whole bottom section off to save weight, only the dash top section survives and will house the clocks etc. i will fabricate a new centre console to house switches, pull chords guages etc

my current job is removing all the floorpan sound mat, and the huge amounts of interior seam sealer ready for seam welding the interior and adding seat rails and rollcage. this really is a horrid job and very time consuming. once the mat and sealer is removed i will then have to wire brush all the remnants away, and use thinners to get rid of all the glue and left overs from the mat. ready for paint once the cage is installed. pics to come

i have been prepping the rear bumper which i have removed the rubber trim from. just needs primer and then ready to paint.

in the meantime i have been collecting parts for the build

sparco evo bucket seats

azev wheels 8j front, 10j rear !

fibreglass front wings

fibreglass 292r front bumper with carbon look splitter

extinguishers, braided rear lines, racing blue brake fluid, battery cut off, window film, toggle switches, sparco seat mounts, flush bonnet catches,

and some inspiration !!

im currently sourcing many other parts and have a few goodies on there way to me now so will have more updates in the near future. hopefully the build will progress at a reasonable rate as i would love to have this on track this year!

next step is finish the interior cleanup, and fabricate the cage and seat rails. i have 3 944 customer shells coming in for race prep within the next week or 2, so i will make 4 cage kits and 4 seat rail kits, along with harness points.

thanks for your time and interest, i will hopefully see you on track in the very near future. keep an eye out for updates to the thread.
you can also follow the build and see other customer projects here

if you havent already spent hours getting the sound deadening off the floor ive got a tip that works. get some dry ice, throw it on the floor and tap the floor with a small hammer. it comes off easy and in big chunks. good luck with the project. we manufacture fibreglass doors they are about 5 kilos each from memory. we do carbon that are3.5/4 kg. these are good if you have a full cage to futher offset the weight as the steel doors weigh a ton

hi yes we have used that method before, it seems to work on some types of sound matt, and not on others!

all the sound matt has been removed now, using a heat gun and scraper! came off quite easily tbh, but leaves residue which will need cleaning off with thinners. the worst job is scraping the seam sealer from the interior. there is a lot, and its tough! passenger side is done, drivers side to do now!

would have loved to get the shell dipped, but i think thats a project to do on the side ready to reshell in the future. i just want the car on track asap this time round!

i may be looking at fg or cf doors in the future, at the minute im not going to mad with weight saving panels/glass, just prioritising atm. the car may have a secondary build next winter once i have myself dialled in with it.

small update from a huge amount of work!

been spending a few hours each eve removing the sound matting from the floor, and then removing the huge amounts of seam sealer used, so the interior can be seam welded. this is the near finished result on the passenger side, the result of a lot of heating, scraping, wire brushing, nitromoors, and thinners, and a whole load of elbow grease. literally one of the worst jobs in the world!

now to start with the drivers side! ready for cage installation, seat rails, seam welding, then paint!

Nick, are you building this car to any particular class or rule? I've always felt that a 951 built to compete in the ADAC Nurburgring 24hrs would be a great project & endurance racing lends itself to joint ownership/cost-sharing.

I'm gradually working on my road-going 951, pulling the parts together really. It's going to be a dry-sumped 2.5 running a Garrett GTX3071R, Tial 0.82 A/R housing, Tial 44mm MV-R, big-valve N/A Head,Vi-Pec engine management etc.
I've sourced Leda coilovers (450 lb front/300 lb rear), Tarrett ARBs, Racers Edge camber plates,Elephant Racing rose-joints, 27mm T-bars, 18" hollow-spoke twists with Yoky A0048s, Big Blacks with 5/33 proportioning valve, Guard 50/80 LSD, KEP Clutch plate/PP & Spec steel L/w flywheel.

I've got all the parts together apart from the head, new intake (probably SFR for both), exhaust, engine management & uprated fuelling system. Exterior & interior will be as bog stanadard as possible - I like the Q-car look.

Looks like a great project. I'm just curious as to the "window film"? I can understand the desire for tinting so long as it won't make it more difficult for a marshal to get you out of the car should the need arise. I know some tinting films are sold with the added benefit of making it harder to car-jack the car - but that's an undesirable attribute on track.

penguin racer, your 951 sounds like it will be a beast! i removed the crank from my 3litre s2 engine today ready for a 2.8 stroker build on the side, then i will add big turbo and the like!

goose, the window film is literally for nothing else but stopping glass shattering all over me if i have a big off! for the moment it is a cheap way of staying safe, over the £600 odd quid i would need to replace with poly glass all round.

today i started with a s2 engine, and ended up with this !

[image][/image]

thought i would keep the 3 litre crank to one side ready for a stroker build on the sideline ready for a swap in the winter!

i now have available for sale everything from a complete s2 engine apart from the crank! all ancilleries, block, pistons, rods, head, cams, loom, sensors, bellhousing, flywheel, injectors, inlet etc etc, pm if you need anything

I get what you mean about shattered glass - when I had this crash I ended up with a "Liverpool diamond" embedded in my elbow for a month.

So long as it doesn't impede your egress from the car in an emergency it sounds useful stuff to have.

Side glass can be cut from pattern and fitted, it doesnt need thermo forming. 4mm PC can be bought for about £25 per square metre.

I have a commercially produced PC hatch, but self made windows.

side windows can be cut from a sheet of macralon, i got off cuts from a local plastics place. remove the rubbers as they weigh about as much as the rear quarter glass, and pop rivet them in. the door windows go in the frames as normal, screw through the frames bellow the plastic to hold it up, then put a bolt through the top of the belt line so it doesn't rattle.

cost me around £15 for the macralon and another couple of quid for the jigsaw blades.
