Hi all, I'm thinking about scratching an itch I've had for many years, with a budget of 40k. Would appreciate any opinions on which of the two cars would be the better buy.. Would probably only do around 3k miles a year, and thinking coupe not soft top..

Thanks in advance,

Chilli

Which do you prefer? The F355 is thought by many as one of the prettiest models Ferrari ever made. They do nothing at all for me and I chose a 348 (twice) over a 355 - yet I would have a 360 like a shot. I think they are fantastic looking cars and still look very modern.

The F1 box was much improved by the time it got to the 360 also.

But as I said, a good 355 v a good 360. Purely go with your heart.

I am not sure that £40k will get you into a decent example of a either I am afraid. I think £50k would be a more realistic price for a sorted one for a specialist indie dealer. That warranty is worth every bit of pice of mind IMO.

For me I would have a 360 but there are lots more around on the road. The 355 shape has never really appealed to me - it is neither a wedge or rounded. I think peoples reaction to both will be different as well. A lot of people will tell you that the 355 is the better drivers car and it will be harder to lose money on long term.

40k is plenty to get a decent example of either if you're prepared to do a bit of research and have prospective cars inspected, imo.

Only trouble is that the fringe of summer is prime buying time so prices are a bit more solid around now.

We will have to agree to disagree on that then... I would not WANT to buy one for less then circa£45k-£50k. If it is a good one then the seller will know it and price it accordingly. I would only buy from a specialist indie dealer though..

Had exactly the same choice a few years ago. Went 360 (Spider) and didn't regret it a bit. On to a 430 now and although that is great, I think you can tell it is linked to the 360. The 355 is quite different.

Best to drive both.

FWIW I picked 360 because of the curvy shape (especially the view over the bonnet) which seemed more 60's and appealing to me, plus the extra space inside and the much higher quality interior fittings and dash. The F1 was much better and the aluminium tub seemed much more 21st century.

Absolutely loved the screaming engine, though the torque needs to be managed because it is a little thin in the mid range. Ultra fast and thrilling though.

355 is a bit more go-kart like, smaller a bit sweeter - less of a handful on the limit.

Thanks for the replies guys.... I've always loved the 355, not that I've ever driven one, but the looks of the 360 tend to push me in that direction... This years birthday present from youngest daughter is a day out at Silverstone, which includes a few laps driving an AM V8V, and a 360... really looking forward to it biggrin One other question, are the red Fezzas really quicker than the other coloured one's? wink

Congrats ancol, picked mine up a couple of weeks ago and finally now getting some sunshine to enjoy it in. I'm also newly out of TVR's and am finding the new ride a real breath of fresh air, literally as having moved from a Sag it's great once again to be roofless. The whole experience is just so much more civilised as the car is so easy to drive at low as well as high speeds.

Did you go F1 or manual ? Guessing manual if you're used to the cerb

And yes the next week will be a long one, but believe me it's worth the wait smile

Ahem. this 360 at a very respected dealer looks stunning for less than £40k.

OK, you ex Tiv owners, my Chim is pretty quick, sub 4 seconds to 60, power delivery is awesome (see my profile for engine spec)... So, and this is key for me, how much better is the Ferrari experience? I suspect it's not better, just different... Always wanted a Fezza, it probably won't be quicker than the Tiv, at least in legal road limit terms, but I'm more interested in the whole package rather than just outright acceleration bragging rights biggrin In simple terms, how much fun is a 360???

Thanks again for all the replies guys,

Cheers,

Chilli

You Chimaera sounds like a beast, presume you'll be retaining that having invested in it to get to that level of performance. Ferrari vs TVR is tough to compare objectively. I've loved my time in TVR's but my biggest criticism was usability. I know others will probably shoot me down here, as many use their cars as daily drivers, but I disliked sitting in traffic and poor road surfaces were transmitted directly through the steering and the seat. I also found myself constantly changing gear in town situations, particularly in straight 6's (less so in the V8's). Whereas the Ferrari is just a bit more sedate when you want it to be. You can leave it in 4th well below 30 and it still pulls happily, sharp corners in 3rd as long as you are not looking to accelerate away hard. So the gears are much longer and this makes it easier to drive in more conditions than any TVR I ever had.

Always missed the sound of the V8's when I moved to straight 6 but decatted the Sag and had a nice throaty burble going on. The Ferrari sound is sublime, much higher pitched, but it is addictive. And that's why you should consider going top-less. I got the Spider and have, apart from one unexpected rain shower, covered the first 200 or so miles with the roof down.

Whichever way you decide to go, it's a blast. I also opted for manual rather than F1. The gate shift is very positive and you feel much more in control, like being back in the TVR, where the F1 I tried a couple of times and could not get used to not controlling the clutch coming back in - slightly unnerving. That said I'm sure it's something you get used to and is obviously quicker than manual shifting. Have to say that down shifts felt great, it was the up's which I didn't like. Guys at the garage also mentioned that the 360 F1 box was also a step up on the 355, which was apparently more "agricultural" - their term not mine.

I have had two TVRs, Griff 500s and two Ferrari 348s. The first TVR and Ferrari I had at the same time for a while. The Ferraris are in a different league. The way they are put together, the balance, the handling.

I have been on runs with a very fast T350 in my last 348 and in a straight line, at about 150/160 (hypothetically of course), the T350 has the edge, but on the slightly damp twisties it couldn't hold a candle to the Ferrari.

With the Ferraris, they are an art form and also have years of racing heritage and know how built into them, with a fairly huge dollop of passion. TVRs can never hope to compete at that level (and I like TVRs a lot).

M3 not in the same league as a 360 for thrills, drama and emotion. IMHO.
