let's just say i was to drop a lump sum on a 458 at the back end of this year.

what?? 165k????

taking no account of running costs which i have been paying anyway(insurance, petrol, servicing etc).....

if i was to sell the car on after 2 years ownership i have 2 questions for you enlightened gentlemen...

1)what would the car be worth after that period of time?? is it likely to fall off a cliff like 430's have and then level out when 5/6 years old..ie.would i lose my shirt on a car that i would buy only a year old and sell at 3 years old??

2)how would you sell such a valuable commodity and what is the time frame you would expect it to be sitting in the garage??basically, how liquid is your investment??
would it be easy to sell?? i can't imagine just sticking it in the classifieds as a private sale and i would assume selling to a trader would result in getting my pants pulled down on the price??

Looking at the PH classifieds £165k currently only going to get your oldest/highest mileage/LHD 458s.

In 2 years the 458 will be around 4 years old and I assume by then there will be a reasonable supply of used cars on the market. I assume that will push prices down. So over the two years you could lose £40'000 as a guess.

I've never traded in a car with a dealer but assume they offer around 15% less than the retail price (so they have a margin), maybe less if they have to do work on the cars, so will probably see a bigger hit.

Selling privately always a bit hit and miss. Depends upon how desireable your car is (compared to the rest of the market) or how keen the price is. Many people prefer the security of buying from a dealer (and I think it is easier to finance cars).

I can see you have a 430 but not how old it is and when you bought it. If you are already sitting on a big loss it might make (financial) sense to hold onto the 430 for a couple of more years and then change.

If you haven't already, get a drive in a 458. You might find that the financial arguments go out of the window (or you might decide you prefer your 430).

cheers for the reply mate...i was thinking about 165 because i was factoring in that i won't be doing it until the end of the year.the reason for my ponderings is that i have actually just sold my car a few weeks ago and already regret it deeply.basically i couldn't justify paying finance on a car that sat in the garage 90% of the time.a 5 year old and a newborn has meant that i have just jumped into an all whistles and bells 5 ltr supercharger v8 rangey sport autobiography.cracking bit of kit but it isn't a donkey!!

now, looking at it from another perspective(hindsight is a wonderful thing) if my 430 had been all paid up there is no way i would have sold it.it just seemed a waste of monthly disposable having it sat there doing nothing.a possible change in personal circumstances could mean i could justify spending up front knowing i would get most of it back in a couple of years.but not if 170 would evaporate into 90 for instance!!

From my little knowledge of the mkt Ferrari's seem to fall into 3 categories.

Buy new the latest all singing all dancing model (458 spider) keep a year and sell for same money.

Buy a good used wanted car (355 CS Scud) and get most of your money back.

Buy a 430 612 599 458 a few years old and drop a large sum.

My advise, buy a CS and enjoy without the constant worry of losing your ar$e, should hold value fairly well and maybe even go up in value, similar for scud but bigger gamble money wise.

a 16m was in my mind due to the exceptionally low production numbers equating to a safe bet(and less initial outlay).but every time i see a 458 i damn near melt!!

Personally I feel prices are squashing up as more and more "modern" models stack up, and more and more people willing to splash £60k+ on a car appear.

Good 360's are still selling for £60k, therefore they are holding up 430's with good ones still selling for £80k.

Currently the above make the 458 @ £180k+ very expensive, especially as there are more 458 coupe's on the market than 430 coupe's right now. Dealers appear full of stock.

Again all in my opinion but with the number on the market and the large gap right now between 430 and 458 I expect by end of year we should easily see £160k 458's. Look at Euro prices, they are already lower than this, the UK market feels expensive right now.

In 2 years time nobody can tell, but assuming the (good) example 360's are still £50k, it would make (good) 430's still in the £70k's .... but perhaps the gap to the 458 will have dropped some.... 458's in 2 years? Your guess is as good as mine but i would hedge on £125-130k.

There is no way dealers can continue to hold 458 prices at these cuurent levels, too many are holding stock at unrealistic prices IMO, 180K+ for 2 year old cars with 7/8k miles!!
I think 140k should get a 2010 458 by early 2013. Thats still 70%+ of new value held after 3 years, impressive by any standard...

so all in all.....430 scuds at about, what?? 130k?? and unmoving are the best bets going forward....that inate fear of the tipping point coming with 458's is obviously not just in my mind reading posts above.i remember the furore when the 430 arrived and there isn't any earth shattering reasons that the same price trajectory won't happen again i suppose.although, am i right in thinking that 458 production numbers are a fair bit lower year on year than 430's??

Not knowing numbers but the sad thing here of course is that had you just bought your 430 for what you sold it for you probably wouldnt lose fortunes in the next 2 years :-)

Nope, I think Im going to stick to my original advice of the 360 CS or maybe the Scud.

Just a thought ..... MP4-12C ???

actually, sat in the mp2-12c the other week down at knutsford.lovely looking thing if not a bit drab inside.ticks the rarity box though!!

thinkingh about it logically,i don't even need to go nuts at the back end of the year...another 430 as you say is just fine i suppose! certainly not fortunes in depreciation

basically, as per my original post. now got 2 kids and my current car was sitting in the garage financed.seemed a waste paying monthly for something hardly used.so bought the rangey but by the back end of the year i'm hoping i'll be in the position to pay up front safe in the knowledge that if i ever needed the cash i could sell the motor to free up funds without dropping my pants
