I don't wish to be pedantic but think accuracy is important on this issue - the key photo in the article is one of the very latest (From an F30 perhaps) which so far seem unaffected. It would be best to put a picture of a key fron one of the obviously affected cars in the article.

BJT said: I would be careful about aftermarket alarms, I've read that there can be integration issues with the CANBUS system on modern BMW's forcing most of the functions to be rendered inoperative. Tracker and OBD immobilisation is best bet. And nothing wrong with getting a 135i...... just get a proper one, not the hairdresser version with a floppy chassis

I was told the same when I enquired about having a full Clifford system. Was advised to just have the standalone Blackjax and it has been fault free.

You will never believe this but I had a call off the garage I bought my car off on Friday saying that they had confirmation this morning that someone had tried to register my car in their name. When we continued the conversation they said that they had the same letter for another BMW at the same time. The log book was only sent off Monday night.
I have the car booked in for an aftermarket alarm and immobiliser now.

Not really a related attack but this was mine this evening, they simply boshed the window and took some out of date price lists from a tatty shoulder bag outside my gym.. But if you wired a dummy OBD port to the fag lighter this would fry their machine?

Well, it's happened again. 19 months after the M5 got stolen, 1 month after the last attempt to steal the X5, it was stolen at 2.30 in the morning.
I cannot express how furious this makes me.

I cannot express how furious this makes me. Sorry about your car but after your experience in the past including just last month, I think it was foolhardy of you to keep the car. It was just a matter of time. I am suprised insurers are still insuring the affected BMWs. Now you have to make a second claim in 24 months you wouldnt necessarily have had to make. So will you be buying another BMW to replace the stolen BMW that replaced the stolen BMW?Big big disgrace that BMW refuse to do anything about this problem.

Sorry but I didnt mean to come across as rude or nothing and I can only imagine how you are feeling at the moment but if I was you, YES, I would have sold the car taking into consideration the theft 19 months earlier and another attempted theft. Hope the police and insurers deal with your case swiftly Goodluck Guv'

Dear Mr Zod, our alarms meet and exceed Thatcham minimum standards. We note you have dropped the thick end of half a bar on cars in the last few years and we expect that you will continue to throw money at our mate Frank Sytner for a while to come yet. We've had a look round the office from the leftovers from the last motorshow we actually bothered to show up at and there'll be a kids pedal car Z4 coming to you in the post to say thanks for your loyalty. Remember to lock it up though - these are desirable cars. Yours, Some inept Customer Service Wonk. PS - and it REALLY doesn't help, but I couldn't find the keys to the 5 on Monday - turns out the wife had left them in it, unlocked overnight as the car was on the drive

I have now followed up with a response to the same thread of emails to update BMW UK and to point them to the PH threads. Will report back when they respond.

Sorry to hear about your loss, again.......Can I ask if you had any other means of security on your car other than just the oem alarm i.e. trackers, steering locks, wheel locks, garaged etc. Would help many of us know if there is anything deterring or if the scum are getting around other security devices in their gone in 60 sec's frenzy.

Am I correct that someone in one of the 2/3 threads running on the subject of stolen BMW's,suggested that on some cars the scrotes are disabling the alarm via the wing mirrors? On the vid showing the 1M being stolen, it certainly seems to show the Guy spending a fair amount of time working on that area, and I don't think the car suffered a broken drivers window to gain access.
Anyone got some more info on the above?

I'm gettiing straight onto BMW to express my disappointment. Sorry to hear of your loss, but yes I would agree with those suggesting you perhaps should have got shot of BMWs after the theft of your M5 and attempt on your X5. They know where you live, that you have high end BMW metal there, you are an easy target. My E60 was taken, recovered due to tracker. When I eventually got it back from the insurance company (8 weeks but that’s a different tale) I got shot of it within 2 weeks. And it had a stoplock on it from the moment it was returned until it was sold.

Zod, really sorry about your loss.
My car is going to be: Underground Garage -> Underground Garage, and I have an Astra for "pub car" and "town dumps".
Seems you may have to consider something different for parking up outside in plain view.
