I'm looking and getting a cb750 and turning it into a café racerish bike but would like to keep the ability to take a pillion. I have an idea for the look of the seat unit but would like to cut the pillion foot peg supports off of the frame, is it ok to have a foot peg and support frame clamp onto the frame so it is removable quickly and won't cause damage. I'd rather not have tags on the frame to bolt them onto so it would be a pinch bolt or quick release style system like you get on pedal bike seat clamps.

Would that be ok legally?

MOT wise, if you have a pillion seat, you need pillion footpegs installed. No seat, then no footpegs required.

Unless you have a MOT tester that turns a blind eye on that for you.

Pillion foot rests are not required on motor bicycles that only have a single seat. In addition some motor bicycles used on or after 14 June 1993, which are intended to carry a passenger may not be fitted with footrests but with hand holds attached to the motor bicycles frame adjacent to, or part of the seat. Refer to manufacturers information eg owners handbook.

I've used clamp on footrests on chop's many a time over the years - it's never been a problem with MOTs or roadside checks.

The single seat bit is open to interpretation anyway, for example my KTM Supermoto technically has a pillion seat (if someone was brave enough) and holes in the frame to bolt on the pillion foot pegs, but I have never actually fitted them and it merrily passes MOT's without a mention.

My superduke hasn't ever had the pillion rests fitted.. i lost them about 10 minutes after buying the bike i wasn't aware it was an mot fail at all!

Ive had loads of bikes with two seats but no pillion pegs i personally wouldn't worry about it one bit.
