hi folks ive just purchased a 1989 golf gti 16v oettinger edition with 108k miles and a FSH, its been dyno,d and produces 182 bhp with no mods done it has all the correct oettinger dials, steering wheel, engine and boot stamps and full electrics ie windows mirrors and seats....and is marked oettinger on the tax book. Has anyone got an idea as to how rare these cars are as i thought they were only made in a mk1????? your wisdom will be greatly apprieciated thanks.

I've never seen an Oettinger MK2 and I've no idea what sort of numbers were produced.
Welcome to Pistonheads by the way, I'd be very keen to see some more info and photos of your car!

Oettinger were the only tuning firm VW aloowed with negating the warranty. The cars were maketted by Scotts, usually of Sloane Square, although there was a Scotts in Stockwell. Nice looking car by all accounts. Got any history?

thomasf486 said: ...i thought they were only made in a mk1? Oettinger were the first to do a 16v head for VW, before they did their own. That was perceived to be an 'Oettinger car' although it was only ever tuning parts. They, like many other tuning companies have always had a 'menu' of parts, but rarely to you find a fully equipped/converted car. I believe by the time the Mk2 came out the Oettinger 16v was a 'breathed upon' head and maybe cam/s. stuttgartmetal said: Oettinger were the only tuning firm VW aloowed with negating the warranty. GTi Engineering were favoured by VW UK too - their conversions mainly focused on engine work, but also included suspension & brake changes too.

2.0 16v 182 bhp standard (built at factory with forged crank, rods, pistons. High lift cams, lifters, adjustable gear). Ported big valve head with matched inlet and exhaust manifolds. Gearbox modified for 148mph top end Electric recaros electric windows and mirrors Oettinger VDO gauges in Votex console Oettinger steering wheel remote central locking and alarm The previous owner had an agreed insurance evaluation with HIC for £5000 stg due to its rarity. My research has just found 2 others of these in the UK, both small bumpers and neither oak green. ive also been told that it was factory built car( costing £25k stg in 1989!!)

No offence but none of this sounds right to me. I'm happy to be corrected but I've never heard of such a thing, all the mods strike me as Oettinger mods plus others. Sounds to me like past owners have created this idea of it being a special edition in itself, and the clearly more recent stuff such as the single headlight grille, the wheels, the half smoked rear lights (F plate being before the Campaign GTI's)... It just doesn't fit. Lovely car, don't get me wrong, but I think it's just a gradually modified '88-'89 Golf 16V.
I use the term 'just' humbly btw.
Nice power, must go well.

^^^ I know exactly what you mean. The only genuine Oettinger 16v mk2s i have seen are pre 1987 all small bumper Oettinger 16v or 16s tend to have 2.0L 16v blocks but most notably have a unique inlet manifold and different metering head. What I suspect is this car is a RE2000 engine build - http://www.morego.co.uk/bbr-gti/gti_mk2eng.php#16V...
