Hi all

Just bought an Audi 80, MY94.

Sometimes when sat at lights, the revs drop quite a bit, and the car feels like it might stall. It always "catches" itself and doesn't stall. It doesn't really affect the running, but its a bit annoying.

Reading up it seems to be a pretty common thing, and the idle control valve (sometimes called ISV - idle stabiliser valve) seems to be the first thing to try.

I want to clean it, but there is no haynes for the car, and very little info. I think I have found it, but before I attack it, just wanted to be sure.

See the pic below, is it the thing I've circled?

Yes that is the ISV. Remove it, spray some brake cleaner in it and give it a shake. You dont want to put a screwdriver in there as it will score it and provent it from working correctly.

When I had my 90 quattro (it may have been the previous 80, this was a while ago) I took mine out and soaked the whole thing in a solvent bath. An amazing amount of black gunk came out and and it made a big difference to the idle.

Thanks guys.

Thought it looked like the right part, but I am a novice so wanted to make sure before I started ripping things apart!

Solvent bath? I've spent 20 mins running carb cleaner through the unit until the fluid has come out nearly clear (still a little yellow/brown - but it was black on the first run!), and have now filled the inside up as best I can and left it to soak overnight.

Fingers crossed - thanks for the advice.

Because this car has an airflow meter on the air filter box, the integrity of all the hoses is vital. Ensure there are no splits in any air or vacuum hoses and that the junctions and clips are all tight. If it draws air anywhere it will give the symptoms you describe.

Thanks. I've re-fitted the valve so will see how it fares later today.
One thing I did notice - the oil dipstick has got no seal left on it at all (can be pulled out without any effort, it just sits on top of its holder) - would this have any detrimental effect?

Yes that will affect the idle on your car massively, get a new seal and check all the vacuum hoses too

Thanks. Idle problem seemingly fixed by cleaning the ICV out.
I will check the hoses though in the next few days, and will keep my eye out for new dip stick or seal.
