Had a bit of heart failure after reading this as just renewed my Platinum and the only reason I keep it is for the insurance. However, the key exclusions are as below lifted from their schedule;

The following benefits are dependent on use of the Card:
• Cancelling, Postponing and Abandoning your Trip;
• Cutting Short your Trip;
• Travel Inconvenience;
• Personal Belongings, Money and Travel Documents;

Personal medical is still there which is the one I wanted but worth knowing about the others. As usual, too busy to read the small print but may well shop around before next renewal.
IIRC, "the Card" is defined as any Amex you hold, not just your Amex Plat.

A nice lady from Amex phoned me up today to tell me my application had been approved. This I already knew of course, as they had sent me an email a few days ago telling me I'd been approved and explaining when the cards and pins would follow.

The nice lady also explained to me that the cards and pins would follow, and then took the time to explain the benefits of the card which of course I had already read on the web hence applying for the card in the first place.

She asked me if I had any questions and I asked if I could get a reduction in interest rate if Amex didn't have to employ people to phone me up to read emails they had already sent to me and read benefits that are on the advert when you apply for the card.

I wondered how they can justify their charges, I guess now I know.

Conversely, I quite like it that they take the time to call and show an interest.

Another reason I will always keep an AMEX (although, granted not an issue for you in the UK) is that when I call customer services they ALWAYS have native English speakers - a very nice perk for me.

Oh, I also like it that my statements also comes all the way from Florida every month hehe

One complimentary Platinum Card and up to four complimentary Green or Gold Cards. Each additional Supplementary Card is charged at £170

This is new - I had 4 additional cards on my account included as part of my £300 fee.

That's the fee if you have more than the four supplementary cards.

My wife as one and it costs me nothing

In the Ts&Cs:

  • One Platinum Supplementary Card and up to four Green or Gold Supplementary Cards are provided at no additional
charge. The fee of £170 applies only to supplementary cards beyond those provided at no additional charge.

Phew!

We don't take Amex in our restaurant as not many customers try to use it and because it takes ages for Amex to pay us.
I won't take it for the same reason and the charges are noticably higher than MC and visa. Anyone with an amex card has others - I know I have and the amex never comes out, they may even have cancelled it!
Thats why my AMEX stays in my wallet as i find it's not accepted in a fair few places so the Barclaycard Platinum is the weapon of choice these days....

Here's an example of where the Concierge service comes into it's own...one of my mates has been desperately trying to get tickets to see Jack Whitehall (whoever he is?!?!) for his daughters birthday....sold out long ago. One phone call to Amex yesterday afternoon and this morning four tickets Row A Stalls.....and no danger of getting dropped by some dodgy ticket agency. Yes they were priced at a premium but they do get things done.

This. The few times I used the concierge for the concert tickets they were very, very slick.

I got a couple of mates tickets to see Nickelback in Oberhausen 2 days before the concert. EVERYWHERE else was sold out - we had tickets the next morning for about 30% over the book price.

Resurrecting the thread as I received something in the post. From July 16th the new annual cost of your Platinum American express will rise from £300 to £450 with no tangible benefits.

Sod that for a laugh.

They want to reduce the membership it seems.

Funnily enough I have a small-ish balance on a Platinum Barclaycard ( >£3000) and this morning I got a letter telling me that the APR was going to change from 16.9% to 25.9% next month! yikes

So that balance got moved to another card today - and it's wavey Barclaycard, you robbing buggers!

I spoke to them today and they kept talking about all the new benefits.
I pointed out they weren't benefits, they were features.

I asked them how many people they expected to cancel and they wouldn't comment.

The new features come in July but my charges don't change till Feb, I wonder if the will reconsider their business plan by them.

For me, it isn't about cost but is about value.
