Final twist with this issue, the SSD failed (second time it’s happened)! I’ve had enough of HP.

So I’ve bit the bullet and upgraded to a Lenovo X1 Carbon. Arrived and very happy.

I’ve still got the original Lenovo Yoga which I use in our business, so hoping this lasts as long.

Hope you find better luck with the Lenovos - the X1 Carbon is a lovely bit of kit.

Out of interest, what are you doing with the old HP unit? I might take it off you for a nominal amount and take a punt on whether whatever's wrong with it is something I can fix - I've been after a replacement laptop for my 8 year old HP!

Really pleased with the X1, it’s feels very well built and functional. Just what I need because I want it to last at least 10 years.

Luckily most of my files are remotely stored on my NAS, so it was just a case of re-installing a few work based software packages, email accounts and Office. A couple of nights work. All done and back up to speed.

I recently bought a refurbed PC (reading advice on here) to replace my Win 10 HP desktop.

Here, with Win 10 Pro installled https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07YST68J3/ref...

It's connected to the BB and I'm using Google Chrome browser, no problems. However, Windows Mail isn't receiving mail and when I try and change the PC settings I get the error message '0x80072ee7 invalid licence key'.

Is this likely to be a problem with the installed Win 10, or am I essentially logged into a this pc with one licence key using the key from my old HP? I've checked my Microsoft account and both pcs are there.

If it's the latter how do I fix it? Thanks.

I guessing this is the Mail App that comes with win10? I suspect your HP desktop had a win10 Home license and as the new one has win 10 Pro the key from the old desktop would not be valid for the new machine. Why this is stopping the mail app from working I don't know (I don't use the mail app). Do you log into the PC with a Microsoft account or is it a local machine one?

Precisely that. The mail app and when I tried to adjust the settings. I use a local machine log in. I did try logging into the pc with the Windows password but it didn't work. Both are listed on my Microsoft account page.

Thanks. yes, I've done that now. Sent a test email from phone, didn't arrive. Tried to adjust pc settings and same message.

Would deleting the HP version of Windows from my Microsoft account make it default to the new one? Not ideal as I'd like to try accessing it again to delete my accounts before returning it.

A message has appeared on my laptop screen. Microsoft will cease supporting and updating Windows 8.1 on January 10, 2023.

I have an impending hdd failure is there a way to transfer the OS to another one of my drives? It’s win10 a

It sometimes boots but runs into bsod can’t run disk check and sometimes the drive can’t be found on boot

SSD or hard disk and is it 2.5" or 3.5"? Either way, stop using it immediately if it's suspected that the drive's the issue.

If it's from a laptop, grab one of these from Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-comUSB-SATA-Driv...

If it's a 3.5" hard drive, you'll need a caddy that also supplies power, like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inateck-Docking-Station-O...

Remove the failing drive from the laptop/PC and connect it with that cable or dock to another machine where it should show up as a USB drive. If the drive appears you should be able to then take ownership of the appropriate user folder and copy the files off of it to the seccond computer.

Either way if the drive's on its way out, don't keep trying to boot from it.

It’s a ssd in a pc , I have the adapter but how can I get the os onto another drive (I have a few)

It's better news if it's an SSD - they rarely tend to fail and when they do it's usually absolute rather than slowly like a hard disk. It's potentially likely you have a driver issue (which often cause BSOD) or hardware issues elsewhere. I would start with unplugging and reinserting every cable, make sure nothing's come loose etc. See if it boots then.

If you're planning to install Windows again onto a fresh drive, you'll need to download the installer - if your existing machine won't boot long enough to do it, you'll need to do it on another PC and create a Windows installer USB. Instructions here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create... I would disconnect the existing SSD when you do the new install, just to make life easier for yourself when it comes to knowing which is which and what partitions are where etc. Windows will reactivate automatically if the only component change is the SSD and you'll need to install all your apps etc.

Once you have the new SSD up and running you should be able to reconnect the old SSD internally and have it show up as a new drive in 'My PC'. You can then copy the data such from your User\<yourname>\* folders. You'll need to take ownership of the folders to do it. Do you have BitLocker encryption on the drive at the moment out of interest?

My laptop on Windows 10 (that was claimed to be the last generation of Windows) well until Windows 11 was invented!

It only stays online for 30/40 minutes before it decides it needs to restart after every other Windows update.

Is there a permanent fix for this, or do we just need to pray Mr Gates gets in a car built by Mr Musk running on Windows when it decides it needs to restart before (ideally after) it crashes - good luck getting Alt Control Delete working quick enough. :wker:

That worked , many thanks . I created a recovery usb, bought a new SSD and swapped it over , only took a day and a half rolleyes

I have 2 odd issues with W11:

If I open images with the default photos App, sometimes the App won't close. I can minimise it, but nothing will close it unless I use task master

Word - spell check doesn't work - any ideas?

Hi hoping someone can help who knows more about windows and Microsoft than me!
I have an Asus laptop which is over 5 years old and can't upgrade to w11. Getting a bit slow too even tho it's got an i5 processor.
So been thinking about replacing with a Windows tablet, but unsure whether I'll be able to install my old printer drivers (it's a ricoh sp100e so has a ddst print driver).
If not guess I'll be stuck with buying another laptop?
