Thinking of buying my missus an Ipad for her birthday. Shes wanted one for ages and now having an Iphone, it makes even more sense.

I have a limited budget but can just about afford a Ipad 1st gen (around £200-£250) where as the Ipad 2 starts to come in from around £300+.

She wont really use it for anything demanding. Internet browsing mostly and probably apps for my little girl.

Does the Ipad 1 still cut it or would she benefit from an Ipad 2? Should i stop being a tight arse and find the extra £100?

Well, you may run the risk of her wanting to do other stuff on the device, even if she only wants the basics at the moment. For Internet, the iPad one is fine, although it does have limited ram, which means refreshing each page on each tab. The 2 is a faster, better device, in my opinion. If you can stretch, do so.

You could of course go for N android offering, of which there are many. Quality varies. They will surf the web, do video, etc if she just wants the basics. Normally a bit cheaper initially.

I did think this.

Samsung galaxy 10.1 tab, for example, looks a perfectly capable tablet and is cheaper.

She hasnt specifically said "I want an Ipad" but she does want a tablet, and the ipad seems the obvious choice as she can sync with her phone and icloud etc, but its not essential.

We use a v1. It's about 18 months old now, not showing any signs of wear although it has been kept in a shock proof case for it's entire life!

It's used for web browsing, email, and toddler entertainment (hence shock proof case).

If she's already an iphone user, then it makes sense to have an ipad as well for continuity.

I sold my ipad1 to my sister in law, and is still in use. Does the job. Facebook, music, Internet, shopping, and so on. Still working fine on those lines. Like anything, however, tech moves on. If wifey is liable to start wanting to use the up to date, modern apps, then it could be an issue. If it is genuinely for basic stuff, go for it. If not, go for a 2. Very little these days is future proof.

I found a friends original iPad very slow compared to my 2 when I bought it over a year ago. Personally there is no way I would recommend an original iPad. Even for memory I would recommend a 32GB if you can stretch to it.

Keep an eye on the Apple refurbished site as they do a 16GB iPad2 for £259 with a years warranty and stock does come in every few days.

I'd say the iPad 2 is worth the extra outlay. It's a great tablet with an excellent screen and feels better in the hand than its predecessor.

It'll also last a bit longer.

Do you have a student in the family ? Ask them to buy for you using student discount ?
- Students get a decent discount on most Apple Products (except those just released).

For example , the iMac 21" is £999 - through student discount this can be had for £870.

+1
Does everything I need. The more OS upgrades that get issued though the more crashes I seem to suffer and at some point it won't be compatible with the latest OS at all....if that matters to you. Watch for refurblished ipad2's on the Apple site, you might get one cheap and they're essentially new.

If she's used to an iPhone, get her an iPad - iPad one is just as good as the 2 (3 has the amazing screen but if you havent seen it, you wont miss it!)

The one didnt have a front facing camera so no skype etc - but for internet, ebay, facebook, email etc its faultless.

will change your digital life. honest to god smile

Cheers.

Yeah I realise it wont be future proof, but as said, will literally just be used for internet surfing, chatting, facebook and probably playing with pics and random apps. its not going to be used for hardcore games or anything demanding.

Been looking on ebay and popped into CEX today. seems ebay starts from around £200 if you want to buy now or could chance it on bids but they seem to fetch similar anyway. CEX had a 16gb gen 1 wifi for £230 or a 3g + wifi for £260. Cheapest ipad 2 they had was £320. The 2nd gen
starts around £280 buy now on ebay from dubious sellers. Would much rather walk into CEX for peace of mind. Ebay is a load of st these days.

I found the ipad2 to be a lot quicker than the original. Browsing is easier, due to it not needing to refresh the pages between tabs, and the gestures is a lot smoother.

So I'm guessing in iPhone terms, the 1st gen in equivalent to the 3GS and the 2nd to the 4? As in, a bIt quicker with some extra features and improvements all round but essentially the same thing?

She has a 3GS and I have a 4. I notice a difference in speed but they both run 5.1 and the 3GS is just as capable unless you start throwing big 3d games at it.

Essentially, but unless you're comparing a 1 and 2 back to back, you'd never call the 1 slow. It's absolutely fine for surfing.

OS6 is due shortly. The v1 will miss out on a lot of things and I imagine values will drop further.

If you can find a v2 then I'd go for it.

Had a look at the Apple refurb store!

Keep Looking here; http://store.apple.com/uk/product/FC769

£259 is a Bargain, I just paid £200 for an android tablet half the size, and If I had realised they were doing iPad 2's for this cheap I wouldn't have!

I had the old one, and loved it. Only upgraded as the new ipad was slimmer. Still the same weight and does all the same things. Really didn't notice much difference between them.

You (or rather your wife) will be very happy with the orignal one.
