what's the advantage of a turret over a bullet or dome?
A bullet is more susceptible to being moved, a simple push with a stick can knock it up.

A dome gets dirty, can mess with the IR at night, can totally wash out any night vision. Avoid using dome cameras outdoors.

Main issue with the Unifi Protect is the lack of camera choice. There are no turret cameras, which are probably the most useful for external use.
Are these not what you are referring to? https://www.broadbandbuyer.com/store/ip-cameras/tu...
Not really a true turret, not so easy to install as a traditional turret. They need to make one like this, with a proper junction box option.

Hi all,

I'm looking to get some cameras for my garage to cover my driveway on the front, and the garden to the rear. I was thinking of getting a couple of G5 bullet cams or the G5-flex cameras mounted from the underside of the roof eaves or directly mounted to the wall.

I'd like to power the lot off PoE, and connect it to one of these: https://www.4gon.co.uk/ubiquiti-unifi-cloudkey-gen...

Is there anything else that I should consider - either placement or equipment-wise?

Thanks,
Nick

If you're thinking you need two cameras to get 180 degree coverage then Reolink has a single(ish) camera for that: https://reolink.com/gb/product/reolink-duo-poe/

Don't know if it supports ONVIF to back up to your device but I used to back my Reolink cameras up to a NAS so I would expect so.

They must have been listening, Ubiquiti have launched the G5 Ultra Turret, just what was needed, although now out of stock! I got some when they were first released and they are good, there are proper junction boxes and mounting options coming as well. Price is not too bad £94.00 inc vat.

Yes should work well, if you can get some. They come with a fly lead, a 20mm hole in the soffit will allow you to push the connector up through.

As I mentioned in a previous post, avoid bullets as they are too easy to move, to easy to whack off.

The G5 Ultras have 'AI' , the people and car detection works really well.

I'd also recommend Ubiquiti/Unifi. If you have a POE switch already then you probably just need a Cloud Key 2 Plus which will act as a controller and DVR (it can be powered by POE too). Just check which flavour(s) of POE your switch can put out.

They have various cameras, here's an example.

Looks like the Cloud Key 2 Plus is going to be updated soon - does anyone know when the new one will be released?

Thinking of:

- Cloud Key 2 Plus (Gen 2 when released)
- G5 Turret Ultras (when available!)

Their NVR has drive bays that can take big WD surveillance drives and acts as a controller, if that's a requirement.

They do a Pro version that takes more drives. All depends on what you need and how long you need it.

I've had one in for several years and it's been rock solid.

I've been thinking about one of these for a while. It's probably a question of 'when' not 'if'. But..... does it have any RAID facilities, or is it possible to back it up to a NAS drive elsewhere? Some sort of redundancy is required.....

I've not heard of any replacement, Cloud Key 2 plus is probably due an update, there will likely be an 'Ultra' coming out , along the same lines as the recent new routers/controllers. May mean some keen pricing on CK2+ which is a very capable unit.

Bit ott for two cameras though.

Thanks guys that’s helpful. I probably don’t need the NVR, as I need around a week or so of storage. I might add another couple of cameras over time if I replace my Ring doorbell too.

You can RAID1, 5 or 10. Not sure whether you can automatically record to NAS as well. There is also an option for a hot spare.

Thanks, good to know. Surveillance is tough on drives, so some level of redundancy / backup is needed.
