I recently sold that very phone (iPhone 12 Pro 128) for £290 on eBay, and bought a brand new iPhone 15, also via eBay, for £615.

Happy with that tbh and I was fully transparent about the battery health being 79% on the old phone, which was actually why I upgraded.

There would have to be a very large discount on apple refurbished. The apple refurbished fell like a new phone.

(I think) you might still be able to trade in a damaged one

I used ioutlet, near Plymouth.
I got a good deal on a 'cosmetically poor' phone. It has a scratch that's hidden by the case.
It's flagged an error about the battery not being original, but not repeatedly.
Just when I was poking around the settings not knowing how to work an iphone I think!

I don't want to pay full price for a phone I take sailing, mountain biking etc.

I have always bought and sold used iPhones on ebay.

Maybe I'm lucky, but I've never had a problem.
I have just followed your advice 🤞

Of all the available ways for buying a use mobile phone, that option probably carries the highest risk.

Go with a reputable ebay trade seller and that risk can be reduced significantly. Good luck.

Always buy 2nd hand iphones from either ebay or FB marketplace and never had a problem, I do always buy local (even if it costs a little more) so I can collect in person and test before paying/confirming receipt, never spent more than £100 and aside from a new battery when needed I only replace when required apps such as a banking app no longer works as the phone is too old for an update, normally get 2-3 years from the phone

If you get a new-ish model you can often find they are within the manufacturers warranty. Samsung replaced the battery on a 2nd hand phone for me under warranty.

£90 for my current iphone 7 bought from ebay in March 2022, just had battery replaced costing £50 so should last me at least another 1-2 years, It will cost me a lot more than that to buy a used phone still within warranty

But it’s still a 7 year old phone running an out of date operating system.

And works perfectly well for what I want/need smile

I bought my iPhone X from Amazon refurbished as “excellent” condition. Think it was £250 a couple of years ago and it’s been great, having to use a battery case now though because it runs low early evening time.

I’d have another from Amazon when it’s done with.

It is still being supported by Apple, possibly, not for long, latest update is 15.8.1

Exactly. It still gets security updates, which is the important thing especially if you use it for any form of banking app or store passwords on it.

According to the internet Apple will issue security updates on the 7 for at least another year or 2

I’m not knocking it, but as I said it’s 7 years old. I speak as someone who had an iPhone X and now an iPhone 13. The 7 isn’t great compared to latest standards.

It also isn’t getting any O/S updates, just critical security updates which will allow it to function.

If you a basic smartphone it’s OK.

That's all fair and well, but if the apps you use require o/s version(s) that are newer than what you can access they'll likely block your access (irrespective of security updates) - as long as you are aware and comfortable with that then all good.

Perfectly aware, as I posted in an earlier post, when the apps I use no longer work correctly I will upgrade for another 2nd hand phone

Did a search and found a local repair shop, dropped my iPhone 12 off and they did a deep clean by dipping it into one of those ultrasonic jewellery cleaner baths, picked it up 45 mins later and the lightning port now works perfectly. Id tried numerous times myself with a cocktail stick but without success. he said it must have been dirty as the chemical turned a dirty colour.

Now to decide whether to keep it or sell to Music Magpie and upgrade with them to the Pro Max version, which will work out about £150. Always fancied the Pro Max but have never wanted to buy one new in case I found it too big, but trying one out the 2nd hand way might be worth a go.
Another vote for Backmarket, and you can trade your old phone in with them. Got Little QQ3's iPhone 15 Pro with 256GB storage from there trading in her old XR, total cost was just over £320. It was fair graded but I really couldn't tell from new, and it's been working perfectly for the last 2 months. When I sent the old XR in, got the full trade in value in my account within 48 hours of delivery to the trade in buyer.

I bought two iPhones (13 Mini & 13 Pro) at Xmas from smartcellular.co.uk

Although delivery took longer than promised, when they arrived they were absolutely immaculate, both boxed and just as original. Prices were well below MusicMagpie (who I've used many times before), GiffGaff, CEX or Backmarket so I was able to excuse them for the delay.

Overall I'm quite chuffed!
