Google Maps requires a data connection - 3G/WiFi/GPRS etc. It does cache though, so if you lose signal it will carry on for a while (as long as you don't divert). I don't know how much data it uses though - reasonable amounts I'd guess.

It is fine, doesn't offer regular SatNav functions, but it's free - and it works for me.

I use EZCam in the background for Speed Cams.

I am still without a phone. Will be 2 weeks on Thursday since I lost my Desire.
I have been promised that come Friday, I will either have a replacement phone, or cash to the value of. In a way, I hope I get the cash, because then I will just sit out and wait for the Sensation.
Having got used to using my old Nokia 5800 again, it is not too bad a handset. Not a patch on the Desire obviously, but a decent handset for its age and spec.

Right, after finally getting pissed off with the memory warnings, I'm going to switch to Starburst. I love the Sense UI and just want to solve the memory issue.

So, I'm backing up the contents of my SD card. I'm going to root using unrevoked and do a Nandroid backup. I'm going to back up my SMS messages. Then I take the plunge!

Wish me luck...

I SHOULD have a replacement phone tomorrow. They managed to find a Desire for me. It was dispatched this morning, and I am hoping it arrives tomorrow, otherwise it will be Tuesday at the earliest.

I'm now rooted....

Why am I so worried that I'll fk this up? hehe

Edit: Oh crap. Unrevoked error: "Failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?" Hmm...

OK, a factory reset allowed the rooting process to work. Bugger, I was hoping to take a backup of the phone as it was set up, but never mind..

Am now doing the ClockworkMod Recovery backup...

Heheh, about time too, now to find yourself a ROM you like. I've just installed LeeDroid's latest one, based on 2.3 Gingerbread.

I'm having issues with the partitioning. Gparted won't read the card in the USB reader... Looks like I might be making a trip to get a new card reader.

I did mine in the phone, I think it was ROM manager that does it...

Supernova is the ginger bread version of starburst. Trying it at the moment but feels a bit laggy. May go back to starburst

New card reader has sorted it. Partitioning underway.

Question; having done the Nandroid backup, do I need to do Titanium as well or is it just for backing up things like contacts? I've already backed up my SMS messages, but being forced to do a hard reset to get root means I've lost all my apps anyway...

What I mean is I had the card in the phone with USB debugging on and plugged the phone into the PC to use gparted. Starburst dev recommends using gparted for the ext4 partition.

Currently rolling back to Starburst, Supernova didn't feel as smooth.

bks, the Gparted live disc has done *something* to my Windows 7 install (despite me NOT touching any of the partitions!). Just a note to anyone who chooses to use it, really. My machine is attempting a startup repair.

Oh joy.

Beginning to regret all this. It's NEVER simple, is it?

Nandroid is like doing a Ghost backup ( or ufsdump if you are UNIX minded wink )

Titanium is more of an online backup and is useful when switching ROM's to put everything back. I also use an SMS backup as Titanium doesn't do that. All my contacts are Google so I don't worry about them they sync back no problem.

I just hit the 'Wipe' in Recovery...

Now installing Starburst 1500. Fingers crossed.

Oh, and the laptop appears to have sorted itself out which is good. Windows 7 really is miles better than anything Microsoft have produced before. I also Appbrain'ed before wiping, so hopefully when I reinstall that it'll bring all my apps down automatically.
