Just noticed a rattle on tick-over and traced it, with help from ATS, to the baffles in the exhaust.
Back to the dealer who isn't sure what the problem is, so various bits ordered and they need her for a coupe of days to do diagnostic tests????
Whist there, had another look at a newer Vogue - quite tempted now.

12 LR4 (Disco) is way superior to 08 FFRR, mechanically and in the technology. Play with the 08RR Nav and then the 12Disco nav..........

Agree about the Sat Nav.
Thought the previous one was pretty poor.

I got my new 12 model Discovery last week. I'm still fiddling round with the iPhone connectivity but notice that the sat nav has a video option. When the iPhone is connected and a video file is selected the iPhone says it is connected to a TV. I didn't get a picture but got sound - to be honest I only fiddled with it for a few moments. Have you tried this by any chance?

Not tried it, mainly because I'm a technophobe and have no video on my Iphone.
May ask one of the kids to try it and report back.

Had a Range Rover Vogue, loved it. Had a Defender 110, loved it. Just picked up an ex demo Disco 4 SDV6 HSE with extras (rear screens, camera's etc)....LOVE IT! (only got 2 kids though)

Well, much as I still prefer a Vogue to drive, the new Disco is excellent as a family workhorse and the performance is pretty good too.
The only small gripe that I have is the delay as it searches for a gear when you hit the heavy pedal and always at the wrong time.
p.s It's still fugly compared to the Vogue!

Agreed, it's soooooo annoying and is my only gripe with the new 8 speed Disco ! It can be dangerous at times too, especially when exiting junctions or attempting to enter fast flowing roundabouts, apply throttle .......wait.......wait .......still nothing ...... weyhey we're off like a scalded cat and everything in the back including the dogs is up against the rear screen !! Mine has been back for the recent software update, it was better for a couple of days but now seems to be just as bad as ever ! Pretty poor for a 2012 £50k+ motor !!

Same issue on the D3 but at least you can blank them off apparently which helps. Nothing worse than being let out at a junction, you put your foot down then get a kind of "I've let you out, why haven't you gone?" look from the person as the throttle in the Disco writes a letter to the engine asking if it would be so kind as to put some power to the wheels.

I just now switch to Sport mode when I need to be sure that the car will pull away swiftly and then switch back to normal Drive after that.

great topic guys - and good information
Disco 3 HSE or Disco 4 lower spec?
I.e. - is the new engine THAT much better that its worth scraping into a Disco4? Even though there will be less kit? for the same money?

My PH thinking has certainly changed recently when looking at cars! It all used to be about power, weight, handling. Now I'm looking at more "normal" cars, my thinking is that the biggest pace of change these days is internal rather than external, around the emerging integrated touch screen technology. A later model integrated Sat Nav, accessory control, phone integration system seems to make a massive difference to the daily annoyance factor or not that a car will provide. That and lower MPG seem to be (in this market anyway) the big changes. I'm got half an eye on Lexus RX as well, and it seems to be the same story there.

So are you saying that the new car is better for the better kit? or engine? or are we happy to accept less kit in new car for the better engine is the engine in fact better? Looks to be with 37% more power, but less economical? I'd be coming from a new M3 - so the kit is quite important to me - but performance obviously less so, as it would be so far off the M3

I'd be coming from a new M3 - so the kit is quite important to me - but performance obviously less so, as it would be so far off the M3 I went from Pork turbos to G4 defender to BMW 335i Cab to E63 AMG with the underlining wife having a D3 thoughtout all my changes ! I agree the kit side of things does get more important as you get older. I turned down a 4 yr DB9 and went for a newish merc E63 AMG. Having said that my wifes D3 still gets used in really bad weather, and as an everyday reliable and great family car, we would not be without it. A D4 yes would be newer and shiny but the kids will still make a mess of it, I will be more worried about dings and it still wont do anything different then our D3 but cost us £x more. Our D3n HSE is a 2007 and about 30k miles and still scrubs up well.

I'm now trying to tempt the wife to buy a 'family car' and then either swap the Disco for either a Defender or a two-seater sports car.
I hardly use the Disco to be honest and it's alot of cash tied up in a sensible car.
The gadgets are great and the new engine and gearbox are too but I can think less sensible cars that I'd rather have.

I'm coming from an XKR so similar to you, it's all about the kit, and the best MPG I can get as the performance delta is massive. If I was going for a sports car, I'd go for less kit and a better engine. But like someone else said on here, as I get older, I want more comfort and toys. I've really got used to keyless ignition, auto lights, integrated sat nav, good climate control, nice stereo. I think the new engine is more economical and gives more power.

The newer engine and gearbox is a bit more economical and nippier.
On the higher spec models (?), the reversing camera can be useful and is improved on even my old '08 Vogue.
The best option is to try both models and then decide.
I'm still a bit undecided about the dial-a-gear thingy.
