Just choose a car park. Prices are mostly reasonable. For two people, public transport can work out pricier than taking the car. The group tickets are only good value for 3-5 people.

Parking in Cologne is pretty easy. If you want to see something cool, park in the tiefgarage rheinauhafen which is the longest underground carpark in europe. It is near the cholocate museum and so a 5min walk to the city centre. It's really strange to drive underground and keep going and going and going..... If you want to park right in the centre, go for the dom parkhaus which is right under the cathedral.
Have fun and go for lunch in the Fruh Brauhaus if you want some tradition german food in a nice setting.

Every year we go to Cologne for work; we park up somewhere like the Hansaring or one of the numerous side streets and leave it for the week. From there it's about a 15-20 minute walk into the centre and although we usually get a parking notification after a couple of days it has never been followed up. I don't think they can be arsed for foreign registered cars.

I went to Cologne on a day trip from the Ring last year. I drove and parked under the cathedral. I didn't bother with an emissions plakette, and received no consequences from doing so. I'm still not sure if you need one, according to this website: http://www.umwelt-plakette.de/int_england.php" What happens to me as a foreigner if I do drive into an environmental zone without a tag?In some environmental zones - for example in Cologne - there are transitional rules in the beginning, but after that and in other environmental zones - such as Berlin - you must figure with a fine of € 40.- starting with the first day."
