Won't be going there today. Apparently armed and counter terrorist police everywhere and toll shut.

Bit more worrying than that I think. Apparently a coach halted in layby being searched by armed anti-terrorist police now.

sky are saying that there are armed as well as normal police in large numbers. that the M6 wont be open until late afternoon at the earliest.

be interested to see how this pans out. there are going to be a lot more of these operations in the coming weeks. i would imagine that our security services are very twitchy at the moment.

Which is why I gave up car ownership! Last week I took a trip from London Euston to Liverpool, a journey of 2 hours 5 minutes. Try doing that legally by car!!

now try being sat on a train for 15 hours because of some nutjob claiming he's put ricin in the sandwiches (not that we'd notice). With 400 people and often no heat/cooling/light or power and unable to leave it - the worst part being the 400 other people.

Or, if your train has a bomb on it if it goes below 55mph.... now, there's an idea for a movie..... smile

I've been on a train in the UK

I'd pay extra for a ricin sandwich

I dont really get the slagging our trains get. They are comfortable, have wifi, plug sockets and are largely on-time...ish. Go into first class and its really rather good.

Certainly better than in France, Germany or Switzerland. Swiss trains are cheaper and much more strict to the schedule, but their service provision to customers is 1980s compared to UK and their first class is risible.

my SWT train was built in the 1980s - its main route is over an hour. No toilets. No aircon. 5 years ago, they took about a quarter of the seats out for more standing capacity and did the interiors in puke lilac.

They are being supplemented by some other trains that have been cascaded/abandoned by SE Trains. They are being refurbished. Still no toilets and still no aircon and more seats out. And no intra unit corridor connection on these.

Result. Oh, I had cause to go to Leeds the other day - 12 hours notice. Standard class return £150. First class return £250. I've flown to Chicago return for less.

It's not the train. It's the daft pricing and the fellow passengers. I quite often get less than 12 hours notice I'll be going to London. So First Class is really not an option. Which means I'm in with the rabble. Many nice people like myself. But enough wkers to make 1 hour 45 seem like days.

It's only the Toll road that closed at the moment, just outside Lichfield. Local news here is that people are being taken off the coach after some sort of chemical leak inside the coach, at this stage it doesn't look like a terrorist threat, stand down PH.

I get the train a lot now - I'd go with this. It's certainly a LOT better than it used to be. It's also not that expensive if you can get split tickets - same train journey I can now pay £39 instead of over £100.

Now, that's mainly cross country, the commuter trains into London on SWT were very different. Treat it as a bus and it's not so bad, but that is most peoples experience these days.

Sounds like you live on the Kingston / Teddington type route. Horrible, Air Con less things. Liked the area hated the commute!

And it prob turns out to be smoke from an aircon unit or something daft.

Having just returned from Italy, I wouldn't swap our trains for theirs.

No air con, no toilets, no announcements, uncomfortable and not running any where near timetable on any of the six occasions I used them.

Or some 84 year old biddy decanting her thermos flask... hehe

Not sure what's worse, the incident or the news coverage - which is quite simply abysmal.
