I recently went to an oriental-themed eatery for a quick pre-movie bite with a chum and my other half. It took us 20 minutes. The bill came to around £17.20. A £20 note was provided (by said chum) and the server, who'd tried to take our plates away while we'd very clearly not finished - twice - which was bad enough, with a glint in his eye and a cocky smile asked 'do you want your change back?' It wasn't my £20. I immediately presumed my chum would say 'but of course, you snivelling oik' however, and to my great disappointment, his quite gentle nature led him to respond 'nah, it's ok.' Now I know it was under £3. I know it's not a lot of money to be annoyed about and I know that, had the service been adequate rather than poor, leaving a small tip might be considered the norm. But I was incensed, fuming, and offended. My GF wouldn't let me make a fuss (on balance, it was best not to anger her) and I still to this moment cannot understand why I found this remark so insulting, and yet she and my chum let it slide! At 2 against 1 I was in a minority - what's the PH view?

I choose the tip. So no, he wouldn't get to keep the change.

for the cheek, and the hasty service, he would have got the Greg_D 1p tip.
that signifies that i have considered the issue of tip and decided that 1p is appropriate. to put nothing is far less of a slap in the face, that just makes you look tight.

This, the preferred method of delivery being to beckon over out the offending waiter, extend your hand concealing the penny and press it into his outstretched palm while looking him in the eye and saying "here, this is for you"

I like your thinking and style Will use this in future where either the service/attitude has been poor or there is an expectation of a tip regardless of the level of service provided. Edit for speeling

The guy was bloody cheeky. I would have said 'yes I do want the change' and they also wouldn't have got a tip.

I'd have asked for the change, and then left the 80p loose change behind.

I ate out in a Chinese restaurant the other day and when we paid our bill (all in notes) we were not presented with change. The change was only a couple of £'s and the service was very good, we were going to leave more but the assumption that the change was their tip quickly changed our minds.
I work part time as a waitress and I always give change back, I also always give money back if a table has overpaid in change. I never assume any money is a tip as I would be mortified if I was asked for it back.

I tip to show my thanks for the service I received, I wouldn't tip after that sort of comment. You got to earn a tip not ask for it.

Having once had a heated exchange with burger flipper at MacDonalds who refused to give me my 1p change from a £1 when buying a 99p cheeseburger I can clearly state I would have wanted my change, it's the principle ( having got my 1p I put it in the charity box ).

I hate when they take your plates away before you've finished! It's so very... American! So no tip from me. Happened to me at a Waggling Mother type oriental place last week. No tip.
And that's coming from someone who tips to a fault.

Asking once I would have shrugged it off. Twice, I'd have spoken to the manager.

That's fine by me, the "will there be any change sir" seemed to be the way things were done in Canada and to be fair they were completely gracious if you decided to have your change and leave something else - of course, they REALLY work for their tips in North America. EXCEPT one a hole in The Keg Steakhouse and Bar in Whistler. it was our last night there and the food / service had been pretty great, we'd turned up late, in a big group, pissed and without a reservation and they'd been more than happy to seat us, even got us a great table. Being the last night everyone wanted to lose their change so we piled in on an unused plate - mostly $1 & $2 coins and some assorted shrapnel. We guessed it was about $70 or about 35% tip but the guy had been a star and they're mostly broke seasonaires. He came over, looked at it, and said "oh, is this for me? Oh well I guess it isn't in pennies, oh wait..." and threw a couple of the coppers on the table a stormed off into the back. We were pretty pissed by then and though he was joking, but it seems not. Little prick didn't come back out, and just turned the light off above our table.
