Sticking accelerator

Left a zebra crossing one day pedal fully depressed and lifted off but engine revs stayed at 7000rpm. pedal fully sprang back so not throttle links, is the E36 323 drive by wire? On a long trip to the continent the engine would still stay at the same speed despite my foot totally off the accelerator...

Any one else had the same problems and is it curable without going to the dealer?!
