Dealing with my first winter owning a Ferrari and whilst the 599 sits in a temp / humidity controlled garage it is very tempting to get her out and go for a blast....

I know the salt thing has been discussed before, however the roads are dry and the sun is shinning...

And there's probably little salt been laid recently and that which has has been washed away by all the rain

There'll probably some concours nutter who'll give the old 'oooh yes but....' - well I suspect you bought it to drive and its not like the seventies with paper thin rubbish steel - just remember that at least to start the tyres will not grip properly because they may or may not warm up completely (depending on how far you go)

Even better, if you have a California/Spider - get the roof down!

I'm out in mine. These are modern cars, not too worried.
Enjoy.

Oooh yes but .... most of mine are SORN - biggrin

I have been driving the 348 and the Maser about. Take the tip about warming stuff up however. The Maser has electronics to take care of wild moments, the 348 just has my right foot biglaugh

However, neither of these are V12's so perhaps I should leave now .. getmecoat

To OP i was thinking exactly the same and coming to the question from same angle, first time owner since September, also with a 599. Ive been out in car every weekend if roads are dry and no rain forecast, in fact currently done 4000 miles in it and still got all of next spring/summer to come so lord knows what annual mileage will be, still making up for all those years i had a mondeo!

On a serious question, i thought 599 is made of aluminium so surely doesn't rust like ferrous metal? Why is salt such a big issue therefore?

Salt, will corrode ally even more so than steel.

Slightly off topic but how do you find the 599 ? What did you have before and how do you find it size wise etc etc
Questions to both you and gusB
Obviously I am assuming silly quick :-)

That must be why I failed GCSE chemistry then. I remember watching that nat geo documentary that's on every once in a while about the 599 being made in the factory. Lots of pics of car being dipped in all sorts of anti corrosion solutions as part of the bodywork preparation etc... are we seriously saying that a relatively modern car of such value relative to all the daily drive stuff cant be taken out if the road was gritted within the last month, is it really going to just fall apart.

Not an expert as we probably didn't even have chemistry at our school :-)
But aluminium will corrode badly untreated, obviously when they build a modern car nowadays it goes through all sorts of processes as you say.
You didn't tell us how good the car is ?

I love it and find it so exciting to drive. Coming from an M3 which I think is fast and a great car, the 599 is in a different league for pace and drama, as you would expect, however it goes beyond what I thought it was going to be like.

I looked at a V12V and a DBS before I bought it and really like both cars, however there is something extra special about Ferraris and as Evo / Autocar etc etc have consistently said the 599 is one of the all time great Ferraris... I did also looked at buying a 458 and may do at some point, however not enough space for me at the moment...

On that boring note it is also amazingly practical, two set of golf clubs and enough luggage for a week to tour with whilst also offering a great cabin...

The engine is not one I think I will ever get bored of as it is full of character, it can be happy pottering along and then also scream all the way to 8000 rpm... does like a drink though...

Thanks
Would one of you 599 owners do me a quick favour whilst washing all that muck off today.
Could you have a look under the front of the car and confirm that it has a plastic undertray, or can you see the underside of the engine, air con or oil cooler rad ? Thanks

I'm really careful with winter driving because of the salt... dry salt is even WORSE then wet salt because it's a fine dust that gets EVERYWHERE - a bit of humidity later and the car will rust in all kinds of places.

So before I take my 308 or my Ghibli out I make sure it has rained for a few days, then dried at constant hight temperatures that require no fresh salt.

I'm a bit less carful with the Aston as it's a 2009 and has better rustproofing - but I still give it a really thorough chassis rinse after I drive it in winter (which is almost never)

As it was dry for once, took the F40 out today

Everyone else must have had the same idea as I went past an F50 and a 275 on the A3

TISPKJ - Book a test drive. For some, the 599 feels too large. I disagree. It shrinks with familiarity and is a total blast. Every time I climb in the car and press the starter, it never fails to overload the senses. Magnificent.

Mine is red with crema interior, but the following 599 colour looks awesome:

The sport seats are a revelation and I would always try and include this in a spec wish list.

Hi that one does indeed look fabulous ..... I actually went and looked at it on Saturday as TFC are the guys who look after my car so local to me.
What caught my interest initially was the cheap one in the classifieds so wanted to do a little research.
Early days ....
