I don’t fully know what GPF is but I assume it makes it quieter and cleaner exhausts? Would a 2018 model be cheaper/better than the 19/20 with GPF or do you prefer ones with GPF?

GPF is better for the environment.
Will be quieter and I think lost about 10bhp as well?

They're not sensitive like DPFs so I wouldn't have any concerns about reliability or anything like that.


I had the equivalent Leon Cupra with GPF and the exhaust was really quiet for the type of car. The Golfs (even with GPF) are a bit louder I think.

What car you got now? I like the Cupra best value for money

Purchased a Golf R new 2018 one of the last three door & 310bhp models and just before GPF filters, as Blank says after this date they lost about 10bhp and had a less sporty exhaust note, worse though they changed from dual point fuel injection to single point which could lead to carbon build up and poor idling, cars upto this date are the ones to go for especially so if your considering any performance mods.

Softer response afterwards as well; you can feel the calibration changes/compromises they've made for compliance.

I agree with the OP’s. We had a facelift but pre OPF Audi (8v) S3 and I think this (and the mechanically identical Golf R 7.5) are the sweet spot as you get the better (quicker shifting but better mpg) 7 speed DSG (earlier cars 6 spd) and the extra 10 bhp. As per Dr G the later OPF cars are less responsive and don’t sound as good.

Also I think you’ll need to be buying a 2017- ours got delivered January 2018 but it had been pre-registered in September 2017 presumably to hit a gpf deadline

Not driven one with GPF but my 7.5 without has a great exhaust note and drives really well.

September 18 is the cutoff; 68 plate cars will be OPF equipped (although there were a few late registered cars that slipped through for whatever reason).

Which is nothing when you have 300 odd hp to begin with. They can map around it so you don't 'feel' the 10hp loss on the butt dyno. The only thing that changes is the exhaust tone, but again that can be tuned around with different piping and silencer/resonator sizing.....plus the soundaktor thingy in the cabin.
