In a vague attempt to discuss something slighty related to Audi on this inaugural post.

The Avus, should they have produced it?

Powered by a 6.0 litre 60v 12 cylinder engine with the cylinders arranged in three banks of four cylinders, and producing 509bhp.

Audi claimed that it would propel the Avus to a staggering top speed of 211 mph and a 0-60 time of 3 seconds.

Does anybody know if the engine was actually made?

If so, what happened to it?

3 banks of 4 cylinders, if its the same engine its currently residing in the new A8 6litre, VW Phaeton and the Bentley Continental GT.

Some AVUSes do exist, not sure if tehy move without assistance however. There was one at Goodwood a few years back, albeit nailed to a bit of metal 40foot off the ground.

There's one in a dealer somewhere in the world too. Might be the same one though?

The one at the motorshow in the early 90's had a wooden chassis and had no engine...

If they had put the W12 in it though, what a car!

Yep - typical Audi - great body, great engine.... wooden chassis.

(except for the ur-quattro, of course)

Isn't it 4 banks of 3 cylinders (two VR6 engines bolted together) instead?

Yeah it might well be Thom, that sounds more logical...

Mmm. Avus.

There was a more realistic two seater called the Spyder (?) on show at about the same time, which was also fabulous. I think it even had fairly conventional quattro underpinnings. I remember an orange one and a greeny/blue one, I think.

I saw an Avus at an Audi dealer in Stockholm back in 2001. Don't know if it actually worked, as far as I could tell they weren't offering test drives Got a picture somewhere, looked very nice indeed...
