I am in agony stretched out on the floor in my office, Yesterday I had one of my nephews in one arm and bent over to pick the other one up and did my back in. Now I cant move it has got worse and worse been taking anadin extra but I cant even stand up today and the pain goes all down my left leg. Has anyone else had this? How do i stop it? and how long will it take to heal?

This is agony...

I had Sciatica for a while-you sure that's it? A numb feeling down back of thigh?
I used to stand as straight as possible then lift offending leg up bending it with toes pointing down & thigh into chest sort of. Stretching it seemed to help.
I'd get it checked out though.

Sciatica is usually caused by the nerve in your back being pressed on by a disk. You get the pain in your leg but the trouble is in your back.

Chiropracter helped me a little bit, then a sports therapist did some stuff with electrodes and the like. i only got it quite mild. Can be excruciating.

Find a chin up bar/football post and hang of it for a few mins, let your body weight stretch the nerves and spine.
Worked for me when I used to get very bad attacks. However I had a slipped vertabrae which didnt help matters.

Yeah - sciatica and I are old buddies, and have been since I damaged my S5/L1 disc at the age of 23. You have my sympathies, because it hurts like hell. If you're anything like me, Aspirin won't even dent it - get yourself on ibuprofen and co-codamol from the chemist (as long as you're not allergic to any of these, obviously). Your GP will probably prescribe diclofenac (which is a good anti-inflammatory) and maybe a stronger codeine-based painkiller (e.g. co-dydramol), a combination which I find takes the edge right off the pain - though people react differently to different forms of pain control so your mileage will vary. Anyway, any attenuation of the pain is a good thing, because it's important to keep moving if you can. Gentle walking is especially good for lower back pain.

In terms of helping it long-term, I really recommend physiotherapy; I had trouble with my back on and off for years, and when it went big-style earlier this year I actually made use of the physiotherapy cover on my health insurance and it's been wonderful - not only did it help the pain enormously but the exercises I was given to improve core stability and muscle strength in the area have kept it nice and stable so I haven't had a recurrence (touch wood).

I done my back in nearly ten years ago , dislodged a joint in my pelvis and squashed a disc in my spine.

Pain was immense when standing in one place for a long time (couldn't do the ironing....shame).

Chiropracter sorted it out properly , cost quite a bit but worth every penny when i look back.

Take 2 x 500mg para and 1 x 800mg of Ibuprofen.. that will help with the pain for a while.

Get to your GP and if you can afford it make an appt with an Osteopath/chiropractor to see if they can offer any immediate relief.

Sounds like a good old 'acute back'

Get someone to pick up some Co-codamol and some ibuprofen from the pharmacy. This will take the edge off. Try to keep moving as much as you can.

See your GP. You'll probably end up paying for an osteopath or waiting for a physio. Need an assessment whatever happens. Need to rule out herniated disc etc.

The pain down the legs is probably 'referred pain' from where your muscle has locked up around the spine. Its probably not 'sciatica' as such. Carrying kids around is not good for your back and the muscle as essentially said 'right, that's it' and locked up to stop the rot.

Hurts doesn't it? Hope your recovery is speedy.

ETA sorry for the repetition, I started this post a while ago but kept getting interupted by the boss.

Lots of walking. Get down the GP too, today.

I had terrible sciatica and it took two years for the NHS to give me the operation I needed ("you've been waiting so long since your MRI that it's out of date, so we'll have to send you for another one...", etc). Usually goes away within 6 weeks though they reckon.

Get some lumbar support for when you're sitting down, a rolled up pillow/towel should do.

Lying face down, put your hands on the floor by your shoulders and push your upper body up, keeping your back relaxed. Lower and repeat slowly a few times. Might help, it's what the physio had me doing anyway.

if its swollen i'd use ice.

If its muscle pain (rather than nerv) then heat would be better.
