Hello Chaps
A friend of mine is currently constructing a Slyva fury with a bike engine, he's trying to find a cheaper alternative to the Quaife reversing box, which at 600 quid is a bit steep. How have other people solved the lack of reverse gear?

Matt,

If I remember correctly, Westfield make a reversing gearbox for bike engined cars. I _think_ it was about £450, but I'm not totally sure about that. I should imagine that Tiger/Z-Cars would offer something similar too, but I don't know about prices.

Hope that helps
Tom

I have a Westfield Megabusa with the std Westfield Reverse Box and have had no problems. However, this is a hotly disputed area among the BEC builders. There are countless tales of woe of reverse boxes failing (not all substantiated) and a number of BEC builders are doing without reverse boxes altogether.

An alternative is to go for an electric reverse such as that put into the Caterham Blackbird by Blackbird Motorsport, Upper Beeding, W Sx.

I strongly recommend your friend joins the BEC car list by going to www.bikepowered.org and subscribing to the chat room. He/she will get massive amounts of help plus the opportunity to join the group for a breakfast meets and see some of the cars.

Hope this helps. (The performance of these cars is quite staggering)
