Is it wrong to fancy a beer of an evening? I have been pondering this recently. Do you have a problem if you just like to sup a couple of bottles of beer a night?.

I was talking to a mate over lunch who says he never drinks in the week or alone. This strikes me as odd but i remember a few threads on PH's of people who feel the same way. Personally i do not think there is anything wrong with having a beer with dinner or while watching a film.

My other half works until about 8, so while i am waiting, i prepare dinner i have a beer, and then maybe one more later while watching TV. beer

how do you class someone as having a problem? I always presumed that it would be a person who craved beer and went to extraordinary lengths to drink if they ran out.

Am i a raging alcoholic ? drink

Thoughts please

You've got a problem if you crave the feeling of being pissed rather than the drink itself.

I think you're about right. I suspect you're just in the habit of doing it. When you run out of beer don't buy any more for a couple of weeks. If you find yourself on the cough medicine as a result then you may have a problem... wink

I admitted to having a drink most nights at a work related medical expecting to get told off.
Instead I was told it was OK as long as I had one drink fee day a week.

Told this to some workmates who were shocked that I did actually have a drink most nights.

I don't have a problem & I don't crave beer everynight (Sometimes it's Gin/whisky/rum/wine....)

Agree with all of the above - a drink every night isn't really a problem, being pissed every night is (IMHO).

I have a beer in the week every now and then but purely because I like the taste, not to get pissed. Drunk people do my absolute head in! It's the same as having a glass of coke/redbull etc you know it's bad for you but you have it for the taste.

Me too. I'll admit to having a problem when I need a drink before leaving the house in the morning. Or I start hiding bottles of sherry in my work desk...

Conjugate the verb 'drink'

I.... like a drink
You... drink too much
He... is a drunk
They... are alcoholics (they go to meetings).

I don't tend to drink much in the week, and even more rarely at home on my own, so I tend only to drink socially when out with friends etc.......

But, I don't think one or two a night relaxing at home is a problem, now if that was 9 or 10 maybe wink

Ill admit to getting pissed once a week (probably less than that over a year).... usually a weekend and due to being sensible all week, then being an absolutely lightweight and being hit like a sledgehammer all at once when i have a few.

Most of the time i can have 5/6 and be fine, sometimes im out for the count without a clue why..... But im one of those that regrets it, swears not to do it again and then promptly does it again 7-14 days later.... I do exactly the same with my special madras (loads of hot stuff added) curry, regret it like fk the day afterwards, but always go back again....

during the week i like food more than booze, the weekend is time to see friends and have booze and watch sports.... although tonight i do have a business meeting in the pub which should be fun

Eh?

I only drink to get smashed, properly smashed, no half measures.

I dont do social drinking, dont see the point of it at all.

Consequently I only drink probably once a month, maybe less.

By your definition I have a drinking problem. How so?

I'd say getting fked because you want to occassionally is a far more healthy pastime than drinking 2 or 3 glasses of wine a night and hiding it under some sort of middle class acceptiblity 'because I've had a stressful day'

I've pondered the same thing before and even went as far as to buy a load of alcohol free beer.

I drank just as much of the alcohol free stuff as I did the normal stuff (i.e. about 2 bottles a night) so I concluded it was beer that I wanted, not the alcohol in it.

So then, conscience clear, I went back to buying the real stuff as it tasted better and was cheaper!

Nope - because your craving beer, not being pissed. smile

I often have a bottle of Real Ale on an evening - for the taste rather than the alcoholic effect (that's just a nice bonus wink )

Thats interesting. Becasue i also discussed this at lunch and i recon that most people who say that, say it because they have seen it on tv or in the movies. So people think thats what they should do after a crap day.

I do not think having a drink helps me relax more than the sitting on my arse on the sofa.

Anyone agree?

What do you drink in the evening then? I'm not a big fan of fizzy drinks or fruit juices and water gets boring after a while.

I do however enjoy a cold beer in front of the telly, or a glass of red wine with dinner. It has nothing to do with the alcohol, it is all about the taste!

But you're not 'craving it'...I.e. you don't want to get smashed every night - just once a month.

I love a couple of bottles of beer of an evening in front of the telly, even more so if I have a new copy of Evo to hand. It's one of life's pleasures, doing the mundane weekly shop on Monday and slipping in a cheeky 6 pack to reward your working week. It can't be analysed, or worried about, as long as it's not developing in to a problem. If there are 6 beers in the fridge, I may have one, sometimes two of an evening infront of the telly. But if I have run out, I won't go out just to get more alco-supplies. Playing sport 4 hours a week eases my decision to enjoy the few 'bad' things that make life more pleasurable.
