I have just bought a car that's currently registered in NI (DVA).

I wondered if anyone knew the current process for 'importing' into the UK as I am aware it has changed recently.

DVLA says...
Vehicles moving between GB and Northern Ireland (NI)

Vehicles registered in NI that move to GB are no longer classed as being imported to GB. Also, vehicles registered in GB moving toNI are no longer classed as being imported to NI.

These vehicles can keep their GB or NI plates and tax disc, or they can request the registration plate to where they are going, GB [i]or NI.

The vehicle registration certificate Northern Ireland (V5CNI) should be used to aid registration in GB and applications should bemade at a DVLA local office. The vehicle registration certificate (V5C) should be used to help registration in NI. Applications should be made at The Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA), Coleraine.

I have read a few old posts about the subject that say you have to get a new tax disk but the website specifically says you dont, it also doesn't mention anything about costs or needing a new MOT.

Arse from elbow is all I can say

That's what is supposed to happen rofl but is never the case, NI & maninland DVLA's seem to have a blockade on the subject.

If you export a car to NI reg it as export as you get SORN fines otherwise

I have done it the other way around and it worked like this ( the process is surprisingly easy now!) :

Buy car, make sure you receive the WHOLE V5c from the seller.

Drive it home, take it to a local main tax office and produce all relevant documents. They will issue you with a new tax disc there and then, and ask if you want to keep the current registration, or change to a local one. If you choose to change registrations, they will issue a certificate allowing you to get one printed up.

Hope this helps.

I bought my car from NI last year; the car was originally registered in the UK but from what I gather that doesn't really matter; all I had to do was go along to the local DVLA office when I got back home and fill out the transfer documents as normal - 1 week later all was sorted and the car was back on the DVLA database and I got notification from the NIDVA to say everything had been completed and the car was no longer on their books.

fking ridiculous. The dumbass DVA need to pull their heads out of their arses and just be a DVLA centre based in NI. Importing and exporting cars between UK regions is ridiculous.

But NI have their own unique registrations don't they (3 letters 4 numbers)? What I meant is that my car had a UK reg on it already smile

I've just bought a car that came across from NI. The GEZ**** plate has been left on it and a new V5 came through in about 3 weeks.

I wish I'd known you could get the reg no swapped over as part of the process as it would have saved me a job.

Bought one of mine from NI earlier this year - pretty easy - just sent letter to DVLA saying I needed a V5 UK and all was good, then I did plate transfer.

So I dont physically have to go down to the DVLA office?

Just to confirm..
I dont need a new MOT?
I dont need to re-tax?
All i need to do is fill in a form and wait for the new V5 to arrive?

I think I'd rather keep my 'dateless' NI plate given the choice.

Reply from DVLA...

If you are taking the vehicle permanently from Northern Ireland to mainland UK you will need to fill in the changes section with your new mainland UK address on the V5CNI Registration Certificate and then take or post it to the nearest DVLA Local Office. Addresses of which can be found on the website below.

If the vehicle is currently taxed you will also need to include the details of the tax disc or submit the Northern Ireland refund reject letter. If, however, the vehicle needs to be taxed you must also submit:

• filled in form V10 (which can be downloaded from the website)

• valid certificate of insurance

• valid MOT certificate (if applicable)

• fee for the tax disc

Please note that if you wish to have a mainland UK style registration number you will need to include a letter to confirm this.

Once a successful application has been received at the DVLA Local Office you should receive a confirmation letter with an updated MOT Certificate (if applicable) and a tax disc within 2 weeks. A V5C will be received within 6 weeks.
