I’ve never smoked. Didn’t even fancy trying it. Just never appealed to me.

But I don’t mind the smell of cigarette smoke at all. Even if I’m sat at a table with a mate who does smoke, and they are puffing away right next to me, I have no issues. The smell of pipe or cigar smoke is quite nice to me.

I met my parents after work tonight in a pub beer garden, and there was a guy who lit up a cigarette on a nearby table, maybe 4 metres away, and as traces of his smoke drifted past our table, my parents start doing the whole loud fake coughing thing, and saying things like “absolutely disgusting’ in their booming middle class voices to make sure he heard.

I found it embarrassing, and asked them to knock it off, but they justified it by saying that cigarette smoke was absolutely vile, they hate the smell of it, and why should someone else’s disgusting habit affect their enjoyment of a glass of wine in the sun.

They are 72 years old, and I was just going to chalk it up to typical entitled boomer behaviour, but then I started thinking I might be the weird one, in not thinking cig smoke smelled bad?

If they had their way it would be banned probably everywhere, but I think people should be allowed to smoke outside in bars, pubs, the street, parks, and so on.

Hate it & as your parents discovered, it’s that time of year where you venture into pub gardens & it’s ruined by fag smoke.

I’m sure the smokers love getting their own back for being forced outside in all weathers!

On a hot day, in a beer garden, i find it rather nice. Tempts me to have one myself lol. Probably reminds me of more wild times of my life.

However, when queuing in a shop and a guy in a wolf hoody with a bum crack on show smells of old tobacco, that is a gross smell.

It is certainly bothering me lately. Our neighbour has taken up smoking and sits the other side of our fence puffing away, as she won't smoke in her house. Wouldn't be an issue but if we have the doors open, our house stinks of smoke within minutes. Also,we stayed at a nice, small hotel at the weekend and at breakfast the chef was stood at the back door smoking, making the whole restaurant area smell strongly of cig smoke. It was so bad we just had a quick tea and toast and then left. Mentioned it when we handed keys over and got a half hearted apology. Not sure if smoking is getting popular again, but I am noticing it more often.

Some rough shag in a pipe smells good as a bystander, but I wouldn't be toking on it myself.

Generic fags though, I'm not that impressed (as a non smoker) but if I'm sat in a smoking permitted area I'd put up with it tight lipped or just move (or usually, not even notice or care). As you say, entitlement at its finest, and it's not restricted to boomers.

As above. I can't stand it inside. Outside it doesn't bother me. I'm an ex-smoker.

I've never smoked and think it's a disgusting habit but for some reason I've always quite liked the smell. Not if it's so overpowering I'm choking on it but if someone is smoking in the distance I quite enjoy the faint smell. My wife couldn't disagree more strongly!

And pipe smoke I absolutely love, reminds me of my Grandad. It's so rare these days to see a pipe smoker, a few years back I followed an old bloke down the street to get a good whiff smokin

As an ex-smoker the odd whiff occasionally makes me want one but the smell of old smoke on people's clothes and breath is unpleasant though.
It's almost unbelievable to think that we allowed it in restaurants, transport, cinemas and the like.

I’m an ex-smoker and I fully agree with this. I now wonder what the hell was I thinking.

I don’t smoke and never have, but it reminds me of my Grandad (who died in 1982 of a heart attack aged 51 frown )

This. I gave up 18 years ago, not touched one since but I still get a whiff every now and then and i think how great it smells. The highlight of smoking for me was one on a chairlift whilst skiing.

As above, madness that you used to be able to smoke in planes etc.

I'm amazed at how a spliff smoked in the car in front of me can linger in mine for minutes afterwards.

Even as a smoker I’d say yes it bothers me in many situations but vapes definitely piss me off more when people are bellowing out plumes of vapour into your face. For me smoking needs to be outside not bothering anyone else and not completely stinking a room out from the smell of your clothes when you go back inside.

What puts me off most is a huddle of smokers in the doorway of a pub. A sure sign not to go in there, regardless of what's on offer.

Same applies to when I'm working in a dealership. I'm usually in a prep bays which turns into a refuge for smokers to come and seek shelter in when it's raining. Hate to be that guy but I'd rather not have my work space turned into a seventies pub.

I don’t mind the smell of cigars and pipes although they’re pretty rare but I don’t like the smell of cigarettes. Strange really, cigars and cigarettes aren’t a million miles different and my feeling about them is totally different.

I really hate sweet, sickly and disgusting vape smell though. It really brings home the fact that you’re breathing in other people’s breath all the time. When the covid nonsense was going on vapes made me realise that the 2m rule was pointless. If someone breathes out vape from a good few metres away and you get a lungful you definitely know about it. Horrible stuff.

Ex-smoker. It makes me feel sick. Cigar smoke worse and vapes nor far behind.
