Luxury vehicle tax runs out in 3 months, what happens?

Not for me, but a friend. His son is about to buy a five years and nine month old car that currently has the expensive ‘luxury’ vehicle excise cost.

If he buys it and pays for the tax monthly by direct debit, will the direct debit automatically adjust at the 6 year point to the lower amount?

I suspect the answer is yes it will, but there’s nothing we can find to confirm it.
