The Desire is being released, T Mobile have just announced its available for new customers, and apparently current customers can have it from 1st April. I've just been onto TMob and they've offered me a 24 month deal - £20 for the phone and £20 a month for 300 mins, unlimited text unlimited web which looks a good deal....

Looks like a great phone

I've not been a massive phone fan in the past and have generally got away with cheap contracts on older mobiles but since the end of last year, I've become more and more interested in smartphones/iphones and I love gadgets. The possibilities with Apps stores make these handsets much more than a phone and as such I'm looking to jump on that bandwagon. I just hope I'm making the right choice in choosing Android over iPhone. A mate of mine has been bleating on about his iPhone explaining that his is jailbroken and as such can do anything. If iPhones were available on a contract less than the £35 that it is, then I might be tempted but I cant justify the cost of the 16 or 32gb model

Sounds like a cracking deal - did you just phone up and speak to T Mobile?
Yeah, they said with my current deal I could go for that, but will have to contact me once its in to confirm.

18 month deals can be had for £20pm but its about £160 for the phone. Im tempted to wait and see what the other networks are doing but it seems a very good deal. Considering I'm now paying £22 a month on an old £15pm 100 mins 100 texts plus £7 internet a month, its a cracking offer! N95 is going to be recycled for about £80 too

According to the T-Mobile forums they will be in shops from Monday. They've said I've been allocated one and I should expect it on Monday.
Are you a current customer? Seems a bit underhand offering the handset to new customers earlier than their loyal customers...

I didnt try and barter, I just asked them what deal they could do with me being an existing customer. They offered me it at that price.

I'm typing on it now and it is recognising nearly all mistakes despite my sausage fingers! I've added some widgets to the home page but now can't get rid. Only criticism so far is that it doesn't come with a manual and its somewhere on the phone. Streaming video over YouTube is superb

Right, just about to go to bed but think I've pretty much found my way around the phone now.

Being able to link facebook contacts with phonebook contacts is great, friendstream runs well although I only use FB anyway, the screen is amazing!

Only issue i'm having is with the Beebplayer as I'm finding that it wont actually stream anything (via wifi).

Right, found the first issue with this phone - its music player.

The functionality of the search function is great, but there's no EQ and the volume isnt loud enough through headphones. I've got it turned up to max and its only moderately loud so its a thumbs down as media centre.

I also cant seem to scroll through the albums covers. It seems to stick on one and I have to use the list to move through them.

So far I've made a few calls with mine and theyve been fine. Touch buttons are large enough not to mash them when inputting numbers.

I dont suppose you'd care to answer my earlier question? Whether it'll do gapless MP3 playback? I suspect not, but I need it confirming, but nobody else but me seems to care about this. frown

On your points, which headphones are you using? Surprised its not loud enough, but the lack of EQ doesn't bother me.

Yeah it doesnt do gapless, or at least not with what I was trying

Having had this for yet another day, I have the odd issue.

Battery Life - Casual use throughout the day will exhaust the battery within about 12-14 hours. Not a problem if you want to charge it through the night. With heavy use, I would imagine that you're going to need to charge it through the day.

When I am receiving texts from a 3rd party (E.g T Mobile, Natwest etc), it always says its from the first person on my address book/facebook account. I'm not sure whats causing this but I'm sure my mate Adam hasnt been sending me them!

The phone is fast and very responsive. I've used it for over an hour constantly and found that it doesnt lag at all.

Camera seems to be fairly decent and is a much better offering than iPhone.

Music player as has been mentioned is a let down due to lack of EQ. Other functionality of the player is fairly good with the options of playlists, searches via artist/album etc and the nice visuals with the phone downloading album covers for you.

Internet is amazing. I've hardly had to touch the laptop these last couple of days as its that good. The keyboard is also brilliant and identifies probably 98% of the words that you enter, even if you get them wrong (Which I have regularly done). Browsing PH, BBC, BikesportNews is a joy and I've even managed to do online banking with it.

Apps - Android market obviously isnt as big as Appstore but its fairly easy to search on. BeebPlayer hasnt been working on my phone for some reason and no matter what I try, I cant get it to pass by the loading stage.

Youtube looks brilliant on the AMOLED screen, the colours are very crisp and vibrant. If you had a 16gb card, I cant see why you couldnt download a couple of movies to watch on this screen.

Phone functionality is good too, It has all the usual options of speed dialling, search by number/name etc and the loudspeaker is decent on it (on par with my old N95). Although it doesnt have noise cancelling on it, when I tried it whilst in an old noisy car, I could still hear the conversation and they could hear me clearly via loudspeaker without having to shout etc.

Friendstream is useful if you use facebook as it provides notifications when things are posted. I prefer the syncing of the likes of Hotmail/Gmail as it pops up as a message when one arrives in your box.

Overall i'm mightily impressed with this phone. As the Android market grows, i'm sure it'll only get better. The only let down would have to be the battery but I am running 3g/wireless connections on it and its syncing weather/facebook periodically through the day. I'll probably buy a 2nd battery once available for when I need it and can't access a charger. With the phone having the new micro USB connector, it means I can charge it in the car through my stereo rather than using the 12v Cig lighter. I havent tried bluetooth as yet so not sure what it can/can't do.

Has anyone got an alternative to the awful headphones they provide? I have a set of Sony in-ear ones which are fantastic but they are on a very short lead and are meant to be used with some kind of adapter/extension. I can get a 3.5mm Jack extension on Ebay but wondering if anyone has used some kind of volume/track skip option on theirs yet?

Games are crap on the Android Market. One thing that would benefit from some developer assistance.

Still loving the phone, tis just an amazing bit of kit.

Thats to do with the fact that they are limited by the space availible on the phone, if they made a massive game with good graphics then you would have no space for any other apps. Once the next update comes along (which is rumoured to allow the saving of apps to the memory card) then as soon as the games can be made, we should see some nice ones pumped out pretty promptly.
Thanks for that, I was aware of the lack of space (512mb on the Desire would be eaten up quickly).

Any idea which release its looking to be on?

I've had no problem with the touch screen, I love the pinch option and its certainly sensitive enough. Texting is a joy and the intelligent way in which it sorts words out is great. I've found that using in ear headphones provides enough volumeo and better EQ than closed types.

For a browser though, it outstanding. I don't know how good the iPhone is, but I've been using this instead of using my laptop the last few days.

Still amazes me daily this phone, just a joy to use. Hardly any software issues and loads of interesting apps. Shazam is amazing! A neighbour had some music on about 3 gardens away and it still picked it up and gave me the right answer!
Impressed mates with compass function on street view.

for the record, I've had no issue with T-Mobile in the 6 years I've been with them. Fairly painless upgrades, decent tariffs and decent upgrades. The only time I had a complaint to make, I was given some free airtime so fairly good in all.
