What the Lagonda SUV won't look like
Anyone surprised at Aston’s decision to resurrect the Lagonda brand may not have seen this one coming – the first car to carry the badge could be an SUV. According to Car and Driver something ‘SUV-ish’ is on the cards from Lagonda, which is about to celebrate its 100
birthday, but it will have design elements from the past.
In an interview with the publication, an Aston Martin spokesperson said this first new Lagonda ‘wouldn’t be an SUV in the same way as a BMW X5,’ for example, and we shouldn’t be surprised to see some styling elements of the marque’s whacky saloon from the late seventies/early eighties. A decision to go down the four-wheel drive route may explain the fact that Aston is already planning a four-door in the form of the Rapide, which would overlap any Lagonda saloon.
The Aston spokesman confirmed that the two brands would take separate routes: ‘We have now investigated and concluded that the revival of the Lagonda brand would allow us to develop cars which can have a different character than a sports car, and therefore offer a perfect synergy.’
Lagonda is also likely to be sold in far more countries than Astons – 100 compared to Aston’s current 32. CEO Dr Ulrich Bez said Lagonda products will have their own design language containing ‘elements of DNA from the past [while being] very future-orientated as we are with Aston Martin.’
