𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
Aside from its credentials as a driver’s car, one reason for the enduring popularity of Porsche’s 911 must surely be the range of options that have been available over the years. There’s two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, coupe, cabriolet or targa, automatic or manual, naturally aspirated or turbocharged, and that’s before you get to the more specialised RS models.
There truly is something for everyone, although some combinations are more popular than others. Here we have a lesser-spotted 996 Carrera Cabriolet which is rear wheel drive and features a manual gearbox. When mated with the optional hard top, this truly is a driver’s car for all seasons.
In recent years, it’s seen very light usage with fewer than 10k miles covered since 2010 when it had its last big service including a new clutch, having been maintained by its owner since. With the overall total standing at just 41k miles now, it’s a very low mileage car and should have plenty more life left in it yet.
Limited use has its downsides too and here we can see it in the condition of the soft top. Fortunately, it’s supplied with brand new soft top fabric which is ready to be installed, meaning that it’s only a short distance from being a lovely example of a rarely-specified car. With spring just around the corner, there’s time to get it ship shape and Bristol fashion ready to enjoy some sunny drives with the roof down, all the better to enjoy the sports exhaust.

• Step inside the cabin and the usual 911 design cues are there: a 5-dial dashboard, clear instrumentation and everything falling readily to hand
• Upholstered in black leather, the interior which shows a little patina but is in generally very good condition for its age
• Refinements include a CD changer, electric windows and, importantly, heated seats
• The front boot contains a full size spare wheel, with cover, and warning triangle
𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
• Metallic silver paintwork shows off the clean lines of the 996 convertible very nicely
• There’s a factory hard top for the winter months and a fabric hood which, although it’s looking its age a bit, can soon be replaced with the new hood fabric which is supplied with the car, ready for fitting
• The panels all look to be straight and dent-free
• While there are a few minor marks to the paintwork and some minor bubbling to the rear of one arch, the paintwork presents very well overall
• The turbine alloy wheels all look to be in good order and wear Bridgestone tyres and the rear and Dunlop at the front, though note that the MOT advisories indicate that a new set of tyres may be required soon due to age
• Underneath all looks very clean
• In all, it’s a very presentable car which can be improved with the fitment of the supplied new hood
𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹
• 3.4 litre flat six rated at 300hp
• Six speed manual gearbox
• Rear wheel drive
• Sports exhaust
• A new alternator and battery have just been fitted and, as a result, it starts first time
• The owner reports that it goes stops and steers just as it should and that the sports exhaust sounds fantastic
𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆
The 996 has lagged other versions of the 911 in value but people are catching on and it can surely only be a matter of time before serious appreciation kicks in. With a purist driver’s specification (two-wheel drive, manual ‘box, sports exhaust) in a convertible body, and with a hard top, this is an immensely adaptable car.
