Overview

There are many great hot hatchbacks. The Mk1 Volkswagen Golf GTI, of course, which created the hot-hatch genre, and the Peugeot 205 GTI, springs to mind readily. After all, the little Pug whacked up the fun factor to eleventy in the late ‘80s through to the ‘90s. But in the last few years, the hot hatchback, especially the smaller pocket rockets, arguably haven’t lived up to the billing of those icons of old. Except, perhaps, the little Ford Fiesta ST.

Whichever generation you’re talking about, the Fiesta ST is a cracker, and that very much includes the Mk7. Luckily that’s exactly what we have for your delectation here. And just look at it: it’s a proper, proper thing.

That’s not always a given with Fiesta STs. As good as the standard car was, it’s always been ripe for fiddling and fettling – and not always in a good way. But this isn’t one of those raggedy STs with the hand of barbarism bestowed upon it – ruthlessly chopped springs, opaque windows and what-on-earth-is-that-monstrosity spoilers. No, no, no. This example has had some upgrades, sure, but they’re a) tasteful and b) useful.

Most obviously, if you’ve read the heading, is the Mountune Kit. That MP215 upgrade pushes peak power of the 1.6-litre GTDI EcoBoost up from just under 200 to 212bhp (or 215 metric horsepower if you’re wondering where it gets its name). Peak torque rises to 236 lb-ft as well. With those increases deployed it’s pokey, but importantly, not too pokey for the road. 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds and a 31-62mph in-gear time of 5.7 seconds, which is 0.7 seconds quicker than the standard car.

Other subtle upgrades include a Zaustworx Centre Resonator delete (crucially, this ST still has its cats, though) and Yellowstuff brakes. But other than that it’s largely original, and a one-owner car with a fulsome service history. Everything about it shouts that it’s been cherished by its owner. An owner, who, by the way, counts himself as an amateur detailer with a desire to keep it as close to tip-top as possible. Finally, don’t forget that being a top-spec ST-3 means it comes with plenty of bells and whistles.

Ultimately, what you’re looking at is a lovely example of a cracking little car – one that is fast becoming another of the iconic hot hatchbacks.

History and documentation

  • First registered 29th April 2016 and declared new at first registration
  • One owner from new
  • MOT until 28th October 2024
  • Comprehensive service history – the majority of which is Ford main dealer, with two services by Mountune and two by an independent garage (the latter due to lockdown restrictions)
  • Stamped service book entries: PDI 29.04.16 at 22 miles; 17.12.16 at 12,049 miles; 18.12.17 at 24,158 miles; 07.12.18 at 33,419; 29.11.19 at 43,385 miles; 12.11.20 at 48,209 miles; 20.10.21 at 55,339; 05.10.22 at 58,255; 03.10.23 at 60,941. There are also stamps for a brake fluid change (27.01.23 at 58,987 miles and 03.10.23 at 60,941 miles) and an air conditioning service (29.11.19 at 43,385 miles)
  • Included in the sale is the original Ford wallet containing the owner's manual, quick reference guide and service book, along with documentation from Mountune, including the MP215 kit registration form. There is also a comprehensive pile of invoices for service and maintenance work, plus the original bill of sale
  • x2 keys
  • Total mileage at the time of our photoshoot was 61,290 miles

Interior

  • Described as ‘almost unmarked’ by the vendor, there’s no obvious evidence of wear to the part-leather Recaro seats, both of which have always been fitted with tailored seat covers (these are included in the sale).
  • Apparently, the rear seats have been used very rarely, and the owner has operated a strict no smoking, vaping, eating or drinking policy inside his pride and joy (aside from a sip of water)
  • The carpets throughout, including in the boot, appear pristine, as do all the interior plastics and the ST-spec sill kick plates
  • The only reported interior defect is some minor damage to the chrome trim around the front cup holder
  • The only modification of note is the 3D-printed blanking plate, with the Mountune badge on, that fills the small (and rather pointless) cubby hole in the centre of the dash. This is removable, though.
  • It’s an ST-3 trim, with a specification that includes metal pedals, sat-nav, climate control, Sony head unit, heated front seats, parking sensors and cruise control

Exterior

  • The blue metallic paint appears lustrous in the pictures and is classed as ‘in superb condition for its age’ by the owner – who classes himself as a ‘bit of an amateur detailer’
  • The car was treated to a Diamondbrite protective coating not long after first delivery, which was applied professionally
  • The level of detail in the description is very comprehensive, with the vendor pointing out a few age-related stone chips on the bonnet and front bumper, which let’s face it, are to be expected. There’s also some slight weather-induced imperfections to the rear Ford badge
  • There’s a two-centimetre (approx.) scrape on one wheel, and some slight bubbling on the surface of the wheels. The centre caps are showing some signs of age, too. Nothing a good refurbishment wouldn’t sort
  • The underside of this ST is described as ‘fine for the age’ with ‘no indication of rust on any previous inspections’
  • In a refreshingly honest description, the owner has also disclosed that in 2017 the passenger door mirror was replaced (due to a birdstrike) by main dealer Hendy Ford (at a cost £265). In 2019, after a minor bump, a crack in the front bumper was repaired (that cost £1,480). And in 2023 the driver’s side window was smashed and had to be replaced through the insurance

Mechanical

  • As we’ve mentioned in the overview, here the 1.6 GTDI EcoBoost has been boosted by a Mountune MP215 kit to a rated 212bhp and 236 lb-ft. The car’s original airbox is included in the sale
  • A Zaustworx Centre Resonator exhaust delete ‘adds a little more volume and burbles without being at all intrusive’, according to the current owner. It has not had a de-cat, mind, which means the modifications won’t have you sweating come MOT time
  • This Fiesta ST comes with a set of Michelin PS4 tyres, which, were told, have plenty of tread left. The readings we have on file are 4.8mm, 5.2mm, 6mm and 6mm
  • A set of EBC Yellowstuff 4000 Series Street and Track brake pads have been fitted, along with EBC BSD Series Sport discs
  • One of the suspension springs was replaced in 2022 (invoice included)
  • The owner is also offering two full-size spare wheels. These are ‘tatty’ and one wheel may need welding, plus one of the tyres is below the legal limit. Still, they might come in handy
  • We’ve been told that this ST ‘starts perfectly on the stop/start button’ and it ‘still feels like every one of the extra Mountune horsepower is there’. The upgraded brakes also mean that it stops ‘impressively quickly’

Summary

The Ford Fiesta ST-3 Mk7 is a rightfully lauded car because it’s a superb hot hatch to drive by any standard. This one looks to be in fantastic condition, both inside and out. It’s also been tastefully modified and upgraded so it’ll offer its new owner something that looks mostly original but, thanks largely to the extra poke of the Mountune kit, is even better to drive and enjoy. So, to put a smile on your face, get bidding…
