Overview
Should you be in the market for one of the most engaging, exciting and, let's face it, iconic two seater sports cars of all time, it can be difficult to know which one to pick. With so many variants of the venerable Lotus Elise produced over its quarter of a century production run spanning three separate generations, how do you choose? Should you opt for the OG perhaps and pick a standard S1? Or maybe go all out and grab a more track-focused hardcore Cup 260 Series 3? Decisions, decisions.
There is one variant, however, that sits in the sweet spot between those two extremes and that is the Lotus Elise Sport 220. Something of a Goldilocks car, the Sport 220 was released in 2015 and replaced the previous S and was not only lighter but was also available with a host of additional exterior and interior features, including air conditioning and cruise control making it a truly versatile proposition.
Powered by a 217bhp, 1.8-litre supercharged Toyota four-cylinder and weighing less than a tonne, performance is still suitably face-melting with 60mph coming up in around four-and-a-half seconds and, thanks to its six-speed manual gearbox and typically impressive grip and handling characteristics, the Sport 220 remains a wonderfully involving experience.
This particular low mileage 2019 example has covered just 16.5K miles since new and has been further enhanced by Nitron NTR suspension that's dialled in for fast road use to improve the handling and damping, as well as the addition of a number of interior upgrades, including lightweight carbon fibre/GRP seats, cruise control and a Lotus Motorsport digital dash for increased visibility and data logging. Complete with specialist service history and presenting in superb overall condition this Sport 220 is ready to rock and roll.
