Expert opinion

When you start discussing the Bugatti Veyron, there’s not much about it that doesn’t simply astonish. We’ll start with the headlines. 1000hp in the standard car (1200hp in the SS model). 900lb ft of torque. 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds and a top speed of between 253mph and 267mph (okay, okay, the convertible models are a little slower, with a roof-down top speed of ‘just’ 229mph. But still…).

Then there are the running costs. The 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 engine’s recommended annual fluid change will cost you £20,000. Ouch. And while something like a boost sensor can cost as little as £10 for the part (it’s the same bit a Golf GTI uses), to get it fitted will set you back around £1500.

Still, if you’ve got the cash, and want one of the fastest, most accessible hypercars ever made – and possibly ever will be made – then a Veyron really isn’t a bad place to put your hard-earned. You certainly won’t need to worry about depreciation. But some of those running costs might still sting a bit. But what price can you put on being able to say you own a 250mph car?
