Salon Privé: It’s a 'Concours d'Elégance'…which I think is French for Pretentious Posh Car Meet. The organisers describe it as:

“The UK’s most exclusive automotive Garden Party as well as one of the most glamorous social occasions on the calendar”

It’s my idea of hell.

With Clarkson, May and Hammond’s Drivetribe going live, the whole concept of neotribalism has even filtered down to us Petrolheads. The theory is that human beings are genetically programmed to live in a tribal, as opposed to a mass, society. Modern, mass society has produced a superficial, isolated and lonely existence that does not fit our nature and does not work. So neotribalism postulates that humans will naturally form social networks (now facilitated by the internet) constituting new "tribes”. Even car geeks.

A tribe of pipe-smoking Swedes, parking up their Volvo 544’s in a field outside Stockholm, to look at each others’ cars; eat open sandwiches; and have a nice chat: I totally get that.

A tribe of dope-smoking Jamie Oliver types, parking up their split-screen VW campers on Finstral Beach in Newquay, to look at each others’ girlfriends; eat super-food packed lunches; and have a nice chat: I totally get that.

But Salon Privé? A tribe of Rolex-wearing wankers with their Jimmy Choo-shod wives, walking round trying to look considerably richer than you. It’s a day out for consumerist barbarians. I just don’t get that at all.

What’s this got to do with Salon Privé? Well, this car won “best in paddock” in 2014. Included with the car is the (surprisingly tasteful) trophy.

It’s a perfect, 2004 facelift Honda NSX manual coupe. It has covered only 16,500 miles from new and has been lovingly maintained, with a full Honda service history, with 12 Honda stamps in the service book with all invoices and MOT certificates. All original New Formula Red paintwork and spotless black perforated leather seats. We have known the car for several years and it is faultless. Drivetribe is about to announce that the “classic” NSX is better than the new one. And this car is indistinguishable from when it was new 12 years ago.
