1974 Porsche

This classic Porsche is something a little different from the usual. It’s a 914 with a twist – a serious twist – and the result is an incredibly fast car.

Starting with a rust-free Californian 914 2-litre in its original colour or (optional) Delphi Green, the previous owner spent $100k over twelve years to turn it into the machine it is today.

Cosmetically it might look fairly stock and original but under the skin it is anything but.

The engine is a 3.2-litre Carrera flat-six. It’s such a sweet, responsive engine with perfect oil pressure and recently rebuilt cylinder heads. Its ECU has been remapped by US tuner Steve Wong resulting in an estimated 245bhp.

The engine is mated to an uprated 901 dog-leg five-speed gearbox with a billet intermediate plate and taller fourth and fifth gear ratios. The engine and ‘box are fitted into the car using Patrick Motorsports metalwork and their uprated (450bhp rated) driveshafts.

The suspension is all uprated using Porsche 930 and Bilstein parts with uprated anti-roll bars and polyurethane Neo bushes. The brakes use vented 911 SC discs with 911 front calipers and PMB Motorsport alloy 914/6 GT rear calipers, operated by an upgraded 911 master cylinder.

The polished/painted Fuchs are 6x16 and 7x16 shod with new Toyo T1R tyres.

Inside this 914 is near stock and in exceptional original condition. The seats, carpeting, door cards and dash are all original Porsche and show no wear. The gauges are 911 and the steering wheel a new Momo Prototipo, which looks period perfect. All the targa seals, door and window rubbers are new.

The result is an incredibly well sorted car that will easily outrun most 911s. Due to its low weight there is a feeling of no inertia, just ballistic acceleration. The gear change is superbly crisp, and it stops and corners like a go-kart. What’s more, it sounds incredible.

We love the unique combination of the standard-looking body and trim in superb condition with the monstrous performance on offer. Original 914/6 models were fairly tame in terms of performance yet command incredible prices. Taking that into account, along with the build costs, this represents fabulous value for an extremely exciting car.
