PORSCHE 928 S4 Auto 1989
It is with regret that I am going to have to put my 928 S4 up for sale after a highly enjoyable ownership.
Reason for sale is that I need the cash to invest in my growing photography business and it's a luxury that must therefore go. Please do not think that just because this is the cheapest 928 on here, that it's condition is in any way substandard. I would happily stand my car alongside the ones on dealer forecourts priced at £9k+. Personally I prefer to buy my cars from the previous owner so I can get a feel for them as well. This car had a Carpool feature on here last year so by all means look it up!
I bought the car through the excellent 928 email list, having been given advice from some of the experts. I am still in touch with the previous owner and I know that both he and the owner before him were fastidious in their maintenance of the car, and had the funds to give it what it needed. The car was previously owned by Jon Spring (a Porsche fan), and prior to that a chap called David Green who spent a lot of money on it. Both enthusiasts like myself, committed to maintaining the upkeep these cars require.

I am happy to send you a link to many more detailed photos of the car and paperwork.
The car is now Cat C following a minor prang in April that despite needing only a new drives side front wing, and a few suspension components. According to Porsche the cost of repairs would exceed the value of the vehicle. I proved them wrong by buying the car back off the insurance company and getting Paul Anderson to get the car full repaired using his own body shop, for less than half of the quote Porsche gave. The car has since been MOT’d (no advisories), had its VOSA test with certificate, and now has a fresh V5 noting the Cat C designation. I have all invoices for the work done totaling £2800.
The car now wants for nothing, having had a big (all fluids) service in March (with Paul Sage – another Porsche specialist), flex plate re-alignment, and some other minor fettling jobs done. As my daily driver, it is imperative to me that the vehicle is in top mechanical condition, and I leave nothing to chance. Belt was changed in 2011 and has only 11k put on it since. I would change it next year if I was keeping the car but Paul Sage checked it at the last service and said it was looking fine.
The only job I would do right now if I were keeping the car would be to refurb the alloys. The front drivers side one picked up another scrape during the prang, and is now worth doing. As this is merely cosmetic I have not prioritised doing it as the car gets used 2-3 times per week (as they should be!). Bodywork is very good. Not concours, but it had a respray in Forest Green back in 2010 so has plenty of shine. There are a couple of blisters under the paint which I will point out, but they haven’t got any worse during my ownership. One or two scratches on the nose cone as well. Car has a GTS rear which is quite common on S4’s as they stopped making the S4 rear some years ago, so it obviously needed replacing at some time. Car was HPI clear when I bought it, and I have the print off to prove this.
Everything works including air con and footwell lights (the first things to go). The battery is in excellent health and fires the car up even after a 2 week lay off. I have a battery kill switch fitted in the boot that’s really useful if you do plan on laying the car up for extended periods, as battery access is not easy. Radio reception has all but disappeared so I disconnected the bee sting roof aerial, however the car comes with iPod cable and a decent Alpine CD stereo so I always listen to the iPod.
Car sits on 17” Cup Alloys (not sure which ones, but not genuine GTS ones), and have spacers to widen the stance. Kumho Ecsta tyres all around with plenty of life left in them. I have had a Ritech X-Pipe fitted and Rear Muffler Bypass to open up the V8 soundtrack and free up a few additional horses at the top end. The car sounds perfect and cruises without booming at motorway speeds, but sounds like Thor clearing his throat under full acceleration. It has also given me approx 3mpg more than I was previously getting (average just north of 20mpg even on short runs).
The car uses next to no oil, with no leaks and the radiator is in good health with both oil pressure and temperature gauges reading how they should in all conditions. Autobox changes smoothly, and had a fluid flush and change in March as part of its big service. I’m going into detail here as these are the questions a prospective 928 owner should be asking!
Everyone (including the Sunday Times) is talking about how 928 values are about to rise, well the manual (and GTS) cars are shooting up already. These auto S4 cars will soon have their day, and right now represent outstanding performance bargains. If you do your homework and buy a good one! 1989 was considered the best model year for the S4 and GT cars: No cats and the digital dash.
I won't be giving the car away as I know it's a good one and I am asking very fair money here. I can put you in touch with Paul Sage who has maintained the car for its last 3 owners. I will welcome any inspection and am happy to answer any questions. Private sale no p/ex thanks.
