1981 Reliant

You are looking at the purchase of a 1981 Reliant Scimitar with more character than is reasonable for any vehicle. I am genuinely sorry to be putting this up for sale, but an interesting opportunity has arisen, and even I think a 6th car is probably excessive (you hear me Jay Leno?). I had wanted a reliant scimitar for years and years, and when I finally got to meet my hero, I was not disappointed. I’ve owned this for just over a year, buying it to go to Le Mans 2013, and was supposed to sell straight after. I couldn’t, because (a) its just too cool, and (b) my kids love it. It’s never let me down, starts each and every time, been mapped on a rolling road, and produces the same HP as from the factory and slightly more torque (graph available). It burbles and crackles due to the straight through pipes, and the overdrive makes it a dream. Cruised 900 miles to Le Mans and back, didn't skip a beat, and was a hero the whole time it was there. Lambo's everywhere - the Scimirat got more kudos.

What’s not to love?

Good points:

--Alternator

--Fuel tank and system

--Brakes and brake lines

--Adjustable and lowered suspension at each corner (you know, like racing cars -do)

--Rear hatch openers

--Otter switch

- Electric VW Polo Ragtop - that's right, AN ELECTRIC RAG TOP! I don't think any other scimitar has this...

- Straight through stainless pipes and rear boxes

- Overdrive

- Matt Black

- New front outriggers

- Did I mention the Wolfrace alloys?

Opportunities for improvement

- Leaks a little

- Body could do with a good sand and paint

- Front fogs are wired weirdly

- The electrics overall work, but could do with some refreshing in places

- Interior is shabby but functions

- Rubbers could do with replacement on the windows

To be clear, this is not a concourse car by any stretch, but is a good, solid, reliable rolling resto on a car that gets loads of smiles and is an event every time you go out in it. Genuinely, driving out of Waitrose (other supermarkets are available) car park being followed by a new Ferrari, I had waves from a couple of kids, and a mum look in the roof, and say “cool car”! ‘Rarri guy got nothing.

Buy this car, pay dirt cheap insurance, buy a 1/2” socket or spanner, and smile ALL THE TIME
