Description
This rare Devonette Bay Window camper was originally registered in December 1972 in Portsmouth, Hampshire and remained with its first owner right up until 1989. Today it is a rarity, as not only is it an original UK market Right Hand Drive vehicle, it is what is known in VW circles as a 'cross over' model, so has the earlier and more appealing 'low light' front with indicators mounted down near the front bumper as opposed to having them up towards the windscreen. The main benefits of this model are that it came equipped from the VW Hanover factory with front disc brakes and the modern steering system. In terms of condition there are very few examples which come close in terms of originality, it is quite simply as close to 'showroom' condition as you are likely to find. The third owner gave the vehicle a sympathetic 'restoration' by which we mean he overhauled the engine as it had not been used for a decade and carried out a high quality exterior repaint as the original paintwork had faded. Very little bodywork repairs were needed, as unlike the majority this vehicle had not suffered from rust. The underside is fully detailed is again as close to the day it left the showroom as you could wish. Moving inside, this original Devon conversion by JP White of Sidmouth is in truly immaculate condition. The quality of the interior shows how little this vehicle has been used. The closer you look at the details, the more obvious it is that this is, without doubt, one of the best surviving examples. The Devonette has been back in use since 2001, at which time it had done 4,300miles, but has been used sparingly since - mostly to VW enthusiast concours events where the vehicle has won numerous awards. The most important awards being Best Stock Type 2 at the leading marque event, The VolksWorld Show and Best in Class at one of the most strict VW Concours events at Stanford Hall. Since 2001 less than 12,000 miles have been added to the odometer (this period being backed up with MoTs and receipts) The condition of this Bay Window speaks for itself, it is not a tired out import which has been restored or an original UK vehicle which has had a catalogue of body repair panels welded into the body, this is a rare find, a true gem which will only increase in value.
