We've not even watched any racing yet and already I love the Le Mans Classic. When the Eurotunnel terminal contains five E-Types parked side by side, a Maserati Sebring, an Aston DBS and all manner of classic fast Fords, you know there's a great event coming.
Not your average car park...
The journey through France was literally a moving motor show of classics. Apart from the cars that had broken down, of course. But the commitment on show was superb; those willing to complete the journey in rudimentary old cars are brave enough, but then to be fixing it somewhere in France is exceptionally dedicated. The campsites are filling up too, which would imply most repair attempts were successful!
With three lads, camping gear and some Friday Service goodies to give away, we needed a big car. And when a Panamera Turbo S was offered it seemed perfect. For the task at hand it has just been superb, cossetting and comfortable while still feeling relatively game when the mood takes you. The noise from the rear seat with the sports exhaust is fabulous too; a deep, thunderous rumble with some lovely crackles on the overrun too. I was happy to remain as passenger in all honesty! Whether I would be as content having paid £2,600 for the sports exhaust is another question. Anyway, an ideal LM car. We've even nursed 22mpg out of it…
Not your average campsite either!
Today we've had another Friday Service and all in attendance were treated to a great show of cars. You can see a few more pics below but particular highlights included an Aston DB5, a KTM X-Bow and a very cool Volvo P1800. Thanks to all that came along, and to the rain for holding off until 5!
So then, it's probably time to think about motorsport. There are six grids for the Classdivided by vintage, running from 1923 until 1980. When you consider the cars that are therefore eligible the Classic becomes even more exciting. We'll hope to catch as much action as possible during the day tomorrow. This evening we're going into Arnage to have a beer or two and ogle some nice cars!
