Searching for a SOTW was always going to be a challenge after last week's 325i romped away and became one of the most read Sheds in history. So imagine my surprise when I found this week's Italian beauty within minutes of looking at the PH classifieds.
Think of an Alfa and what pops into your mind? For me it the 75 V6, the Alfasud, the original Spider, Tarquini cornering on two wheels, the Giulia, shiny induction pipes, glorious engine notes and the fabulous Montreal. In fact that list could go on and on as I have not mentioned the 308C, the GTV or the Arna...well maybe not the last one.
There aren’t many manufacturers where you have to think long and hard about which is your favourite model ever created. There aren’t many manufacturers where you take as much care over how the engine looks as you do with the exterior and there aren’t many manufacturers with such an evocative badge and equally memorable history. Recent Alfas may have lost some of the romance, but all seem to command a little respect from those that love cars. Something about them says to others that, while you could have chosen a more mainstream option, you decided to go with your heart and buy the oddball choice.
we featured a 164
, and this week we bring you another in a similar vein in the shape of a 166. When these were new I thought they were great and, rather controversially, I thought they were handsome too. In fact I still do. Created in 1998 under the watchful eye of Walter de'Silva, this model was available for almost 10 years but was dropped from the UK market in 2005.
This week's shed has the lovely 3.0 V6 engine with the aforementioned 'shiny pipes’; it also has some rather nice leather upholstery, cruise control and just about every option known to man. To suit its luxo barge image it has an auto box. Personally that doesn't bother me one bit but I imagine that this will split opinion between PHers, and as the ad says that the 166 needs to go to finance some work on the seller's GTV, we know that he is an Alfa enthusiast and that can only be a good thing. You don’t need to MOT it for 6 months, it comes with FSH and had the belts done at 83k and apparently everything works - except the air-con which needs a re-gas. The paint has faded unevenly too, but can you really think of a better way to waft to work than in a V6 Alfa? I am a German barge fan through and through but even I am tempted with this one - I hope you are too.
Advert reads
: Alfa Romeao 166 3.0 V6 Sportronic (1999). Here for sale is my 1999 alfa 166 sportronic. Its been a fantastic car but a recent and expensive failure to my gtv has forced me to sell the 166.it has 6 months mot, recent new tyres, full service histoy, the belts were done during the 83,000 mile service, full leather interior, cruise control, electric eveything, auto windscreen wipers, aircon(needs a regas,i have always just wound the windows down),mechanically completely sound.Just put 1000 miles on her on a family holiday to wales and she did'nt miss a beat while returning 33 mpg at 70 mph.pretty good i thought.
Bad points would be the bumpers have done the usual alfa trick of fading at a different rate to the rest of the car and the paint is missing in some areas.i think its visible in the photo's?also as mentioned earlier the aircon needs regassing.all this has been factored into the asking price. All in all a load of car for very little money that has the most fantastic engine and isn't a run of the mill boring bmw. £1000
The dasault falcon 2000 easy is not included in the price.
