The big question ahead of the Indianapolis race was who could beat Marquez? The rookie sensation dominated qualifying but failed to capitalise at the start as Lorenzo grabbed the lead and Pedrosa took second. Bradley Smith made a corker of a start to take fourth, but could he hold on for the whole race?
Lorenzo did his best at the front to check out before the tyres inevitably went off while the Repsol pair squabbled amongst themselves. Cal tried to bridge the gap having overtaken Smith early on.
Marquez led from lap 15 after a poor start
With seven laps gone the Indy race was shaping up to be quite entertaining. Lorenzo had a slight lead but with the Repsol riders, Cal, Bautista and even Bradl within spitting distance, the Spaniard wasn't going to have it all his own way. What would happen as the tyres started to wear?
Unfortunately by half distance the challenge from the 'non-aliens' had tailed off, leaving the usual suspects of Pedrosa, Marquez and Lorenzo to fight for podium places. With a move on lap 15, Marquez led the way; could the others match his pace?
Ten to go and Marquez pulled the pin, setting a new lap record and putting a few metres between him and Lorenzo. Then he set another lap record and made those metres a clear second. Game over.
With Marquez safe and clear for the win, the Lorenzo/Pedrosa and Rossi/Bautista/Crutchlow battles made up for a slightly dull mid-race. Cal rode like a demon but eventually lost out to Rossi.
A great one-two for Repsol Honda at Indy
A strange flickering start light caused a bit of confusion at the start of the Moto2 race, but Scott Redding just dropped the hammer and grabbed the holeshot.
His lead was short lived as Japanese rider Nakagami hit the front and started to gap the field. After Redding was demoted to fourth with seven to go as Espargaro and Rabat slipped past, a podium looked out of the question for the Brit. Fair play to Rabat, he rode fantastically to catch Nakagami and take the win but an even better result was Redding, who secured third ahead of championship rival Espargaro.
Moto3 and the promise of a three bike dust-up on the last lap sadly failed to materialize. Rins took the win from team mate Alex Marquez (yep, that's baby brother and it was his first podium) with Vinales in third.
