As we all know competing in the Dakar is a battle against incredible odds, the more so for the truly heroic Race2Recovery team. Doubly sad news then that both the team's Wildcats have
had to retire
from the event after suffering, respectively, mechanical and crash related damage, the latter from rolling end over end on a sand dune. As we learned from
organiser Xavier Gavory
earlier in the week, everything is epic on the Dakar, not least the accidents...
Race2Recovery keeps on trucking in the Dakar
In true Race2Recovery style the boys are still in the event though, the T4 support truck now the team's representative and hoping to see honour upheld at the finish line. Supporting driver Mark Cullum are co-drivers Chris Rutter and Daniel Whittingham, the latter an amputee following injuries sustained while serving in Afghanistan. In true Dakar spirit the truck nearly missed a stage cut-off time after stopping to help another team whose vehicles had become stranded but managed to make the deadline and stay in the event. Best of luck to them.
For now though a picture of one of the team's Wildcats (as delivered by PH!) in happier times and a worthy Pic Of The Week to celebrate an incredible effort from all involved. True grit, in desktop wallpaper form!
