Aintree probably isn't the first circuit that comes to mind when the British Grand Prix is discussed. Everyone naturally thinks of Silverstone but the Merseyside circuit hosted F1 five times between 1955 and 1962. Indeed the first British GP at Aintree saw Stirling Moss take his first F1 victory so it's a pretty significant track. Apparently there's a horse racing course of some description nearby too...
Anyway, it now runs solely as a sprint circuit with a healthy calendar of events. Which just so happens to include the Caterham Academy. The season kicks off tomorrow so keep a look out for a race (sprint) report next week.
But for today let us celebrate the glory days, not those hooligans in Caterhams. Fangio, a 250F and some fabulously period track adverts. This is the 1957 race, an event actually won by Moss and Tony Brooks in a Vanwall. Fangio retired after 49 laps with an engine problem, at least according to Wikipedia. Still, that shouldn't be allowed to get in the way of a cool photo, right?
