Elise Solutions' gull wing roof project hit the buffers a few months back
after Lotus pointed out that their original design - planned for launch with the
S2 - was protected by a patent application.
Elise Solutions' designer Tigga Reese was then faced with a difficult
situation to resolve in order to proceed with development. There's good news now
with the companies coming to an agreement that will allow development to
continue.
A release from Elise Solutions states:
"Following several months of legal negotiations relating to the “I-Bar™”
solution, I am now pleased to be able to make available for public knowledge a
statement that has been prepared by attorneys acting on behalf of Lotus Cars
Limited
"When Lotus launched the Elise the possibility of a removable targa
top was advertised. Lotus developed a prototype and filed for patent
protection for the concept. However, technical difficulties have prevented
Lotus from offering a finished product so far to the high standard that is
expected from the Lotus customer in the discerning market place. Tigga Reese
has independently developed a prototype of a removable targa top roof for the
Elise. Since the early availability of such a product would be of benefit to
Elise owners, Lotus has agreed not to use its patent rights to stop the sale
of the roof developed by Tigga and his colleagues. Lotus wishes them success
in their venture, which will remain independent from and not in any way
controlled by Lotus.”
