I'm looking at staying at the Campsite Le Pont Romain for this year's trip. Has anybody stayed here? If you have what's it like, any good or bad points? Can you recommend any other decent campsites on a budget?

Thanks

We stayed there last year, it is a really good campsite with good facilities, the downside is that it aimed primarily at holiday campers and there is no real LeMans atmosphere on site. Another downside is it can be a bugger to get to the circuit at some times due to traffic congestion, this put us off for a re-booking. After saying that though it is a very good "campsite", try www.clubmotorsport.org.uk we stayed there several years good access to the site and plenty of atmosphere.

I first stayed at LPR because they had pitches right up to the weekend, and as I was after a quiet site since I started to take the Mrs. Now I wouldn't stay anywhere else; stayed there the past 5 years.

  • Pitches are a great size, fit multiple cars and any size of tent plus there's leccy. There's a pool on site too.
  • Only ten minutes to/from the circuit, not much longer race day morning*. First year we went along the D323 as we were in blue car park and got stuck in traffic for 4hrs. Next year went through the centre and parked at Rouge (near the stage); past 4 years it's never taken more than thirty minutes to get to the circuit. Circuits within cycling distance.
  • Well sited for black ops (again within cycling distance).
  • It's quiet. I know this might be a problem for a few, but we're only at the camsite when we need to kip and shower so it's perfect. We're at the circuit for the rest of the time.
  • Pitches always available and cheap if booked directly. It's getting busier yearly and Speedchills have started to use the site, but it's still quite a well kept secret (hope it stays that way).
All in all, a good site if any of the above appeals.

There is a good municipal camp site in Ecommoy which is south of Le Mans on the old N138 (whatever the number is now) Just far enough away to lose the looneys but close enough for good access. Couple of good food establishments in the town and plenty of bars.

How many pitches are available? Does it get booked up fairly quick?

Has anyone suggested this site,

Camping Le Vieux Moulin, at Neuville Sur Sarthe. Just north of the town, used it a couple of times, they have tariffs for Le Mans week, about 20 mins to the track. Good big pitches in amongst trees. Great restuarant, the old mill, nearby, but need to book, well in advance. Some of the teams used to use it for their pre race feast.

Le Bounty just south of Mulsanne and they operate a shuttle service and big screen for the footie.
BUT I think they will be full for this year.

Good, looks like it's still well off the radar.

We are staying at Camping Pont Romain this year for our first ever Le Mans. Having booked it, I am now slightly concerned about the logistics of staying off site for a 24 hour race. A few people I have spoken to have advised me not to move my car off parking rouge during the race. I understand that there is no shuttle service from the site to the circuit this year.

I would be interested in hearing how anyone has coped camping off circuit. Do you go back to the campsite mid race or do you just sleep in the car? Any advice appreciated.

Reserved parking places at the circuit are our solution; Parking Blanc or Parking Rouge although we prefer Blanc. We camp some 20 miles away on the north side of Le Mans and have three places for three cars and six people; that way members of the party can come and go as they please. Race day traffic can be a bit of a pain (although after some 10 years we have now found a better way in) but otherwise it’s not a problem.

Do you actually go back to your campsite during the race then?

Yes. We make three trips: Friday for the pits walkabout (after St. Saturnin), Saturday for the race (& stay until we are ready to drop) and Sunday for the remainder of the race after a decent breakfast. Sometimes we pop down to Arnage or Mulsanne during the race and then return to the car park.

I might well do that then - traffic allowing. My thinking was that I would stay until about 11pm, go back to the campsite then return in the early hours for sunrise (I am an avid photographer and that seems the best photo opportunity to me).

I've stayed their twice in the past and its a good site, however it does take a good long while to get to the circuit on race day. Plus it means at least one of the party can't drink.

What time should I aim to be arriving at the circuit for qualifying/on race day?

Would moving the car around 11pm on race night be doable if I came back at sunset? I don't want to miss half the race stuck in a traffic jam y'see.

Am assuming you mean leave at 11pm at night to come back at sunrise, in which case the answer is yes, very comfortably doable (can't speak for your campsite, but getting in and out of the circuit around that time won't be a problem).

qualy ids not on race day, it takes place on Wednesday/thursday as usual, on race day there are a few support races before the main event.
