Well after 3 years of mostly careful incident free riding it happened last Sunday.

I was out on my CBR600RR which is really my trackday bike but the one I always ride when solo. First ride with a mate from the music industry, he normally rides a Thunderbird but decided to take his rarely ridden 600TT out.

We did a very leisurely north of river run (one of my favourite routes) through Dalkeith etc to Fremantle, stopped for a bite then headed back home on the main road (Stirling Highway)as John needed to get back to go out.

Approaching a set of traffic lights at Eric St in Claremont probably doing 55KPH the lights turn amber and the car in front accelerates (we were much closer to the lights than you would normally stop) then sees the camera and slams on the brakes, stopping half a car over the line.
Because I ride with a finger on the brake always expecting moronic driving I manage to stop behind him, but my mate behind was accelerating then locked it up and clipped my left leg (I'd just put my foot down) as he came off frown

We picked his bike up, significat damage, andsat on the side of the road arranging to get a trailer for his bike. He was unhurt, I had a massively bruised calf front and back. Once we knew his brother was on the way I decided to ride home with another mate who just happened to be passing... very painful changing gears and we seemed to catch every bloody red light on the 45 minute trip back to Kalamunda.

I was going to a gig that night and managed to go but spent most of the night sitting in growing pain.

Next day it's much worse, I lift my leg to put a sock ona nd 'click' AAARGH!! as my foot moves sideways yikes
GF insists on taking me to hospital, xray shows completely broken left fibula. Gets plastered, back to orthopaedic surgeon Thursday, he is unconcerned about the break but very worried about my knee, he suspects ACL and other damage with possible bone damage to knee frown
Got MRI booked for Wed this week, may need surgery, he suggests up to 12 weeks off work worst case.

Minor compared to some I know but a shock when you think at first "that's a big bruise, prolly hurt for a few days"

Now in full leg brace and struggling to sleep

Unlucky mate, sad to hear. Get well soon! My place won't pay sick, so I'd have to work from home. Hope you've got that option?

I've pretty much used my sick leave last week as I'm only new in this job, have a few days annual leave available but I'm a mobile service tech (on electric wheelchairs...) so can't really work at all for now.

I have initiated a MVIT claim (third party motor vehicle injury, paid for out of our registration fees) which will cover medical, loss of income and if appropriate compensation.

Sounds painful. Bit confused why its moronic driving though, amber means stop which the car driver did. I presume you're claiming off your mates insurance.

Yeah kind of sounds like the driver decided to blast thru on amber then changed his mind, were you guys accelerating to sneak thru behind him? Naughty naughty! On a serious note I hope the scan goes ok and the leg is not too bad.

Yep painful. Moronic describes the general standard of driving here, seriously they don't have a clue. Also describes the disgusting and cynical approach to "road safety" by the authorities. Don't do anything which will have any real impact, like teaching people how to drive, or improving the pathetic road system, just invest in more and more hidden cameras as revenue raisers, while brainwashing the morons that as long as they aren't exceeding a number on a sign then they are safe

Amber actually means stop if safe and sensible to do so, and the driver said he wasn't going to stop (neither would have I, we were way too close when they changed) but he saw the camera and anchored on.

No the claim will be a 3rd party personal injury claim on the Motor Vehicle Insurance Trust which is funded by our registration fees and covers all road injuries.
It isn't compulsory here to have your own insurance, even 3rd party property... but I always have fully comp myself.

Mmm sorry but sounds like the moron was your mate, we all gamble on amber, but, like the driver in front did if we saw a camera we would prob re-think and brake to be safe.
You were obviously planning going thru as was your mate who would have been 3rd in line, you said he was accelerating.

This is not a lecture by the way, we all make mistakes and take the odd risk, but sometimes we have to hold our hands up and say "I fked up"

I dont also think the car driver was a moron. I would have done exactly the same. Who wants 3 points on their licence? I thought cameras were supposed to prevent accidents and injuries and also prevent loss of lives. It has obviously done the opposite in this case.

Yeah don't get me wrong, legally he will cop the blame. unfamiliar bike, split second wrong decision, trying to e-stop and swerve right on the oil patch at the lights...

Still pisses me off when the people who should be making roads as safe as possible do things which contribute to accidents. In this case a camera, in another last week where a rider was killed (admittedly riding very fast late at night) on a deserted road with an unmarked and unpainted island in the middle of the road immediately after a crest... his fault? yep speeding and probably sitting close to the centreline of an empty road; unneccesary hazard? yep but that will go unmentioned.

I would be surprised if any of you would have stopped if you were driving the car in these circumstances. We tend to take an interest in driving properly unlike 99% of "passengers in the RH front seat of a car" do here.
We would tend to anticipate the lights changing, be ready to instantly judge whether it is a "go" or "stop" at an amber.
In this case he braked as if an emergency and still stopped well over the line. That is clearly a "go" situation.

haha don't think I can claim too much kudos, I had no idea it was broken just thought it was a massive bruise... yeah it hurt (a lot) but I'm always hesitant to express too much discomfort, always seems like my ailments are minor compared to others (I spend my workdays servicing mobility equipment, wheelchairs etc for some massively incapacitated people)

As I mentioned it was definitely not a lecture, I can not criticize as I failed my Mod2 first time by 'racing the lights', always take it careful approaching lights now.

Hope the leg heals up quickly and that it is a clean break with no ligament damage etc.

You will be back on two wheels in no time.

Having a MRI scan of the knee tomorrow as ligament/tendon damage is what the surgeon is most concerned about, I guess the knee got overextended as it was hit from behind.
Back of my knee is extremely swollen and rock hard, I'll update when I get the results but they are saying early next week before he sees me.
In the meantime my employer is on my case to get back to work but I'll be waiting at least until I see the surgeon again.

Sitting in St Peter's, Surrey right now for the same thing. GWS matey and keep the leg moving if you can as an obstruction at the back of the leg can imped the circulation a bit. Keep the leg raised an if the leg gets any worse, get yourselve down to the out of hours GP/A+E ASAP.
