Been In an Accident - Advice Please?
Discussion
I've just been in a car accident
Just my luck, i had the dash cam running but the impact was so bad from the crash the dash cam rebooted and didn't save that clip
I'm going to inform my insurance about the accident tomorrow when i feel less shaken and to make sure me or my passenger don't get pains overnight but i have some questions.
My car is valued with with all mods declared for £1500
How much am i likely to get for the car? Bearing in mind the mods are declared and i've lots of receipts for almost all of them so it wouldn't be fair for the insurance to compare it with a standard car of it's year. (It's a 90's Corsa)
Should i claim from my own insurance then let them chase it? I'm thinking if i do this i'll be less likely to receive a decent pay out for the value of the vehicle.
He pulled out a give way onto my side of the road. I move over a lot and he still smashed me (avoided a head on though)
So he came out the give way and the front of his car went into my side. I have a witness in my own car but non independent. Is there any way he can worm his way out of this?
I wasn't feeling worried at all until i realised the dash cam didn't save the clip...and you know about how people have a problem admitting fault with these things

1) Let the insurance sort it out.
2) Get your money back for the dash cam. It didn't work when you needed it.
3) You will get a valuation with the mods on.
But if mods are things like wheels, wing mirrors, bonnet grilles, front/rear bumpers, you took stuff off to put the mods on so it won't be a
"standard car value"+"mods cost"
valuation, if that is what you were expecting.
Ps I thought a 90s corsa came with mods as standard.
Hope you're all ok.

Write down what you saw and did. Include anything you could have done to avoid a collision. Draw a diagram to support this. Have your passenger do the same.
Take a good look at your polkicy. In many cases the modifications have to be declared but are not included in th value of the vehicle. With a low value vehicle you may have a fight on your hands.

Thanks. I took the memory card out the camera, but no joy with the file so far but i'm going to see if i can find data recovery software to retrieve it.
Not much chance of my money back, it was a £36 chinese ebay one sadly. Was 100% with potholes ect but the shunt seems to have been too much.
Happened just over an hour ago so adrenaline still pumping through me. Feel more angry than anything because of the work i've done on it. It was a reliable daily driver with some modest mods rather than the usual "Chavved up" ones.
Sore fingers is the only pain so far. I must have hurt them with the steering when when he hit the side or something.

Sorry to hear. But:
- The camera: You went cheap, you pay the price: It's toast when it counts.
- Like in most cases of tuning/modification on alder bangers: Your car doesn't get more worthy if you add stuff. It just doesn't work that way.
There I said it.
Whoa whoa, who said it was an old banger?- The camera: You went cheap, you pay the price: It's toast when it counts.

I didn't just "add stuff" it was a work in progress. 70% of the work i'd put in was restoration (new wishbones, ball joints, track rod ends, strut top mounts, struts, springs, shows, slave cylinders, ect.) and 30$ of the work was mods.
I was only pointing out that it's unfair to compare an old car in great condition with some modifications and receipts to back it all up, to your average Corsa B on auto trader.
I wonder if the fact i've never found another 5 door CDX turbo diesel for sale would help my cause?

All the replacement parts will not count as they are serviceble items.I didn't just "add stuff" it was a work in progress. 70% of the work i'd put in was restoration (new wishbones, ball joints, track rod ends, strut top mounts, struts, springs, shows, slave cylinders, ect.) and 30$ of the work was mods.

The moddification parts probably will not count either because although declared the insurance company would replace with standard.
So then you get book value for an old car.
Write down as much as you can remember right mow. Even just little snippets. Leave the paper out and write more bits as you remember. Do it before you sleep, it'll help cue your memories tomorrow after sleep has dulled some of your recall ability. Write everything you can possibly remember.

First offer about £400.Probably offer no higher than £900.How much am i likely to get for the car? Bearing in mind the mods are declared and i've lots of receipts for almost all of them so it wouldn't be fair for the insurance to compare it with a standard car of it's year. (It's a 90's Corsa)
Sorry about your accident mate but there is no way a 90s Corsa is worth £1500. I sold my wife's mint 2000W Corsa B - high spec 5 door with aircon etc - just over 5 years ago for about £1500! Will soon be tasked with selling MiL's Corsa C on a 52 plate and very much doubt I'll get anything like £1500!
Have a chill, get your thoughts straight and write down in simple terms what happened. Do a sketch of what happened, placement of cars etc. tomorrow, or next day go back to the site and take some photos. Your insurance company is going to try to go the rock bottom cheapest route to replace your car, simple economics I'm afraid. The mods you have done wont count much to them, aftermarket wheels may register a blip on their costing, but chassis work is just going to be shrugged off. If your lucky you could strip the bits off with their agreement to try to save some parts. Good luck with it all
Thanks for the advice all.
Regarding the value of the car, yes the typical Corsa B won't be worth that much and if it is, then just to a select few.
I bought the car for approx 1k 3 years ago and it's since had approx 2.5k spent on restoration work, replacement parts and modifications.
I just find it strange you can provide documentation for how much the car owes and through no fault of your own you're going to be financially burdened because someone elses fault.
I guess i better just suck it up though if it doesn't turn out how i'd like it (It probably won't knowing my luck)
When ever i've seen standard models of my car in it's trim and with it's engine they are usually around 1k due to how rare they are becoming (1.5td is rare enough let alone in cdx spec).
I feel better now since last night as well. A bit clearer headed and less sad

Just got a voicemail from the other insurance company now, offering to deal with me directly.
They've informed me their client has admitted full liability for the accident.
Am i best dealing with them directly and informing my insurance and broker for logging purposes, or would i be better off letting them deal with it on my behalf?
I prefer the former so i'm i have a bit more control. If i chose the former and during the claim process didn't think i was getting what i deserved, can i then opt for my insurer to step in for me?

Because 'what a car owes you' and 'what it is worth' are two completely different things.Retroman said:

Use your insurance company. They have the skills and its what you are paying them the money for. Just make sure you emphasise the car and replacement valueThey've informed me their client has admitted full liability for the accident.

Start checking adverts for similar cars to yours both local and national, keep copies, of those in similar condition to yours, then or is that when they offer you £300 you can say look at these pay more, my father wrote off his old VW a couple of years ago, like you car came out and hit him, insurance company offered £1500, I supplied adverts for similar cars and pointed out the low mileage and they paid at the third attempt £2500. Best thing is you are ok, cars can be replaced.
