I went to see a 2009 car today at an independent dealer which has over 2.5 years of extended warranty. Car is the right price, spec and so on. Had a look at the service book and it was due a service, I asked if they would have the service done, and they said yes they would do it in house. Now here is the interesting bit, I said with the extended warranty it invalidates it, if it's not done by Porsche. Now he was not really aware of this so he said he would ring Porsche up and pretend to be a customer asking the question. I was there listening to the conversation, and the Porsche service department said it does not invalidate the warranty as long as genuine Porsche parts are used.

Is this correct?
Will I be able to extend the warranty when it is due?

Unless the car is on sale or return the warranty is VOID and of NO VALUE. It CANNOT be transferred when the car is sold by a dealer, only on a private sale (including one brokered by a dealer of course).

ALL WORK has to be done by OPC to keep the extended warranty valid. If ANY services are done outside of OPC, the warranty is also VOID. This does not apply to the ORIGINAL NEW CAR warranty but it DOES apply to the extended warranty (which is what an 09 car has).

You will only have a car with a valid warranty IF

1. the car is on SOR on behalf of a private individual; and
2. the service is done by Porsche; and
3. the warranty transfer for is filled in and signed by the previous owner and you.

This is getting complicated. The dealer said it was £25 to swap over the warranty.

That's the new rules, yes.

But, the rules also state that any extended warranty can only be passed on if the car is sold privately and not through a dealer.

Really? Have they changed it - I'm a devotee of the RS4 these days!!

So you can now have your car serviced outside of OPC and the extended warranty remains valid?

I'm surprised, but happy if I am wrong.

Yep, now allowing service outside of the OPC network using genuine parts.

Blimey

In that case I stand corrected, although our hero needs to be careful that the car is on SOR or the dealer having it through his hands will mean the warranty is void anyway.

I was there listening to the conversation with Porsche, and I was expecting the Porsche service dept to say it must be done by them, but they didn't.

Not sure what to do now, at the least I will have to call and check how the warranty is being signed over.

If he tells you that the warranty remains if the car is sold by him (and not as a private sale brokered by him) then run - he is lying.

On the other hand, it's worth trying. Seems a shame that the previous owner paid a lot of money for cover that would be wasted purely because the car had been bought & sold (doesn't seem fair really, does it?).

I have had Porsche specifically refuse payment on a new extended warranty on the grounds that the car was actually already covered with 4 months remaining - the new owner clearly stated that he'd bought from a non-Porsche dealer (me) and they said it wasn't a problem and transferred cover to him.

Bloody hell I have been having kittens here my heart can't take it.

I have just phoned the dealer and he is doing a sale or return so the warranty will be signed over by the previous owner. So It looks like I will be the proud owner of a guards red 2009 C2S

I think important info like this should be made into a sticky for new Porsche owners. It's quite important that we know the rules concerning these things. After all of my trawling on here I was under the impression that a Porsche dealer was the only one that could carry out the work.

I bought a 2010 Cayman S from an OPC a couple of weeks ago. Warranty is until December 2015. Under 'What's not covered':

A claim under your policy.....shall be invalid if:
.
.
Service, repair or maintenance has previously been performed on the Vehicle by You or by a third party who is not an authorised Porsche Centre/Authorised Porsche Service Centre.

That's what I thought the position was.

Agree with this. Like Soovy, I'd always believed that the extended warranties were only valid if all servicing work was done by OPCs. I don't think the fact this has changed is widely known at all. (Until now, that is)!

I think someone needs to get the most recent policy terms and conditions and post it, and then I'll tell you what the position is once and for all. I can't find it on the web and apparently you can get it from Porsche if you ask.
