MX5 v 200SX v MR2 v ?
Discussion
Thanks for the extra info chaps.
I don't really fancy 4WD, so that rules out Imprezas & Evos, and I don't really like the look of 350zs, although I guess I could be persuaded on them!
I've just been looking at Skylines, and they're cheaper than I thought! I know sod all about Skylines - anyone fancy giving me the dummies guide...?! I know the main variants are R32, R33 & R34, and the GTRs are the stupid quick ones, but that's about all I know. Aside from the fact that they ruled in Gran Turismo

R32/33/34 is the model number. You might get an R34 for your budget but less likely. R32 (non GTRs) are pretty rare in this country and 'only' have an RB20DET (2.0 straight six single turbo). The R33 could be had with the RB25DET. You can get various flavours of GTS but essentially if you avoid 4WD then avoid the GTS4. Some autos are about but there are plenty of manuals if you look. Share some parts with the 200SX. Engine can go far with fettling.I don't really fancy 4WD, so that rules out Imprezas & Evos, and I don't really like the look of 350zs, although I guess I could be persuaded on them!

On the second one I had an HKS cat-back exhaust and induction kit. Removed all the lag and took in from 200lb/ft 200 bhp to 240bhp and probably a similar amount of torque. Helped in terms of unsticking the rear in the dry.
40 bhp from a cat-back and induction kit?I'm calling shenanigans!
'Stage 1' cars (decats, exhaust, air filter, plugs, pump, raised boost via boost controller) frequently make 270-280, and that can be done for £500 or so if you are savvy.
I daily drove a rev3 mr2 turbo for 4 years and 60k miles. Took it through Europe to the south of France, Scotland, Cornwall and it never went wrong once. The key to reliability with those is don't go mad with the mods and service them well. Mine had a decat, st205 water/air intercooler, st205 ecu and boost controller at 1bar. It was rapid and felt ballistic. My one complaint would be the steering, which ddidn't feel as tight as a modern car probably because of the 50 profile standard tyres.
Unfortunately 4 years of daily use took its tole bodywork wise. Gave it to a family member in the end and it's still going strong and everything still works, may try and get it back from them in a few years.

I would suggest a 944 S2 as well....
I got mine in Jan for 3400, it now owes me 5k, but Ive done the belts and water pump so no need for them for a few more years, they were the big bill. Its averaging around 25-28mpg with alot of mixed trips...on a motorway run its over 30. Just fitted 4 new tyres all round for £285, Khumos but they seem pretty good. Car handles great and is very torquey, plus you can have it on classic insurance. Very practical as well, I have an 8 year old and 4 year old they love it.
Had an MX5 MK2 RS before which was more fun overall, but wasn't as practical. My MX5 averaged 29mpg over about 20k.

MR2 felt most special and fun to me.
You can also consider a N/A which should keep the costs and potential problems down.
If you go for a Turbo, get at least a Rev3, before that they were not that quick/revvy.
I dunno, my Rev 2 was pretty quick, at least until it banged off its 112 mph limiter anyway! You can also consider a N/A which should keep the costs and potential problems down.

I agree though the MR2s are great cars. I'd love to have another at some point.

Having owned a 200SX, I have to say I don't think you'll be able to find a god one now. A really good one is a great car, but so many have been crashed, abused, tuned via internet hamfistedness and ignorance.... I wouldn't want the task of finding a good one now no matter what my budget. They're old cars, and prone to abuse despite their inherant robustness. Also, any "LSD" in the viscous LSD will have long since departed by now.
If you want ultimate handling, MK3 Mr2
Given that an MR2 is going to be older than a last of the line 200sx and just as likely to have been thrashed/messed with is it going to be any easier to find a good one?If you want ultimate handling, MK3 Mr2
With any car popular on the modding scene it is going to be very hard to find one that hasn't been abused.
I've owned
- 200sx S13 version
- MR2 Turbo - rev 3
- MX5 phase 2 shape
MR2 was the most "exciting" but you do need to pay it some respect.
Currently have a Gen 7 2006 Toytota Celica VVTLi 190 t-sport. The engine is fantastic and handling wise it would keep up with any of the above and then some. Given it's FWD you can properly rag it round without too much fear of disaster.
Another potential anyway, hugely practical too, the boot is huge and you can just about squeeze 4 humans in one at the same time.

Ahhh Pistonheads, the cause and solution of all of (if not, most of) lifes problems. I'm not one to resurrect old threads but this seems appropriate. I'm on the cusp of selling my 1994 MR2 turbo and picking up a 1993 S13 200sx. That is until I googled 200sx vs MR2 turbo and found this thread.
I think i've changed my mind.

Most 200sx's are overpriced rusty nails these days...drift tax has pushed the prices on even s
tty ones through the roof.
I went through all the jap cars i could think of when considering a new weekend toy...bought an Integra Type R and couldn't be happier with it.
Spot on about the drift tax. Some of the S13's that come up are silly money, still with their original CA waiting to start rattling! The one i'm looking at is top money because the shell is clean, but otherwise they should cost what they did a few years ago.

Why are MR2 turbos so cheap still? Because they 'can't' drift.
