If you would like to offer your accommodation to welcome Ukrainian refugees, here is the Fr government website where you can offer your help in the first instance: https://parrainage.refugies.info/
Following registration you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire about your offer, and if it is taken up you will be contacted directly by the appropriate bénévoles.
Not applicable to you if you're not in France, but there is a much higher chance that Ukrainian refugees will speak English rather than French and consequently British residents may be in a unique position to help out.

We've had 3 families arrive in our village and another 2 are on their way today. They are being transported by local volunteer Brits.

Lots of folk have offered Gites and the Maire has made the local hall available as a meeting/advice area. We, along with lots of others have donated food, clothing, furniture, heaters and toiletries.

There is no talk of empty properties being taken by compulsory means, so no worries for your missus.
